From the Notes
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Bats earned a split with Indy in Louisville, taking game two by a 3-2 score last night. Louisville scored all of its runs in the second inning against J.T. Brubaker. Gabby Guerrero homered to start that frame, his fifth of the season. The Indians plated one run in the third on a Kevin Newman RBI single that brought home Pablo Reyes. The score remained 3-1 until the eighth, when Newman doubled and eventually scored on a pinch-hit single by Jordan Luplow. The Indians went 1-2-3 in their last at-bat against Kevin Quackenbush, who picked up his 12th save in 13 opportunities. Reyes led the Tribe with a 3-for-4 performance from the eighth spot in the order. Newman also collected two hits and stole his league-high 20th base.
THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND: The Indians return to Victory Field for nine games in a 12-day span. They close out the first half with two games against Louisville and three against Columbus. The Tribe then open the second half with a four-game set against first-place Toledo. The Indians are 23-16 at The Vic and have won nine of their last 12 games in the Circle City. Indy has hit .274 thru its first 39 home games this season. Since 2005, that .274 home average would rank third behind the 2005 squad (.282) and 2010 team (.275).
10 DOWN, 10 TO GO: The Indians are 6-4 in 10 matchups against Louisville this season, with 10 games remaining in their head-to-head series. Three of Indy's four losses to the Bats this year have come by two runs or less (3-1, 4-3, 3-2) while four of Indy's six wins in the series have been by three runs or more (5-2, 7-1, 4-0, 7-1). The Tribe finished 15-8 against the Bats in 2017, including a 7-4 record at Slugger Field. After posting a remarkable 18-4 record against Louisville in 2012, the Tribe lost the season series four straight years (2013-16), going 42-53 during that stretch. The Indians haven't won the head-to-head series against the Bats in consecutive seasons since 1998-2000; they went 11-5, 9-7 and 13-3 in those successive campaigns.
WE WERE THERE: Casey Sadler earned the win in Monday night's game to improve to 4-3 on the season. He has shaved his ERA from 5.53 to 4.01 over the last five weeks (since May 22), allowing just six earned runs in 26.2 innings pitched. During that stretch, he's gone 2-1 and walked just 2.4 batters per 9.0 innings (7 BB/26.2 IP); he walked 5.0 batters per 9.0 innings (14 BB/25 IP) across his first eight appearances of 2018.
PABLO FOR THREE: Pablo Reyes' three-hit performance last night was his second of the season, the first coming on June 14 vs. Toledo at The Vic in a 4-0 triumph. Reyes has been hot over his last five games, batting .438 (7-for-16) with two doubles and two runs scored. In his seven games prior to the hot streak, he was just 1-for-16 (.063).
GUESS WHO'S BACK: Jose Osuna was optioned by Pittsburgh on Monday and officially joins the Tribe roster today. Osuna has been a monster at the plate for Indy this season, batting .340 (50-for-147) with four homers, 19 doubles, 31 RBI and a .941 OPS. His 162 wRC+ is the best mark among International League batters with at least 150 plate appearances. From June 3-17, Osuna hit .377 (20-for-53) with six doubles, 12 RBI and six runs scored, leading to another promotion to Pittsburgh. Following his last call-up, Osuna appeared in nine games (two starts) and hit .118 (2-for-17) with one double and one RBI.
SINCE MAY BEGAN: Since May 1, Jordan Luplow has hit .325 (68-for-209) with 31 extra-base hits, 40 RBI and 30 runs scored in 58 games. All eight of his home runs with Indy have come on the road. He has hit safely in 24 of his last 28 overall and is batting .422 (27-for-64) with three homers, five doubles, 15 RBI, 12 runs scored and 12 walks against just nine strikeouts over his last 19 games. His 142 wRC+ for the season ranks third among International League batting qualifiers.
SINCE JUNE BEGAN: Luplow is hitting .339 (37-for-109) since June 1. He is fourth in average and fifth in hits among International League leaders since that date.
BABY, YOU'RE A FIREWORK: Kevin Kramer is batting .371 (13-for-35) with one triple, four doubles, four RBI, and seven runs scored over his last 10 games. He ranks among league leaders in total bases (3rd, 139), XBH (T-3rd, 34), runs scored (4th, 45) and home runs (T-4th, 11). Kramer is second on the team with 25 walks.
LET FREEDOM RING: Indy's offense is in the top three of eight categories in the International League. They rank first in average (.277), hits (758), doubles (204), OBP (.340) and slugging (.429). They are second in stolen bases (67) and sacrifice bunts (27) and third in total bases (1172). Indy is on pace for 348 doubles as a team; the Victory Field era record for most doubles by a Tribe team is 299, set in both 1998 and 2000.
BY THE NUMBERS - 10-11: The Indians are 10-11 on the Fourth of July since 1996. The Tribe have lost four straight (outscored 28-11) and seven of their last nine on July 4 dating back to 2008. The Indians and Bats have met on The Fourth 14 times since 1998, with the head-to-head breakdown being a 7-7 split.
