Beloit Sky Carp News Release
MIDLAND, MI - Daniel Robertson delivered a two-run double in the top of the ninth inning of a tie ballgame to give the Beloit Snappers a 5-3 victory over the Great Lakes Loons on Friday night in Midwest League action at Dow Diamond.
Robertson's heroics helped the Snappers climb above .500 to 13-12 and take two out of three in Great Lakes. The Loons now have a mark of 12-15.
The rally began with one out in the ninth and pitcher Sawil Gonzalez (2-1) on the bump. Ryan Mathews and Brett Vertigan set the table by patiently waiting out consecutive walks and that gave Robertson the chance to be the hero. He was only too happy to oblige. Dakota Bacus (3-0) was rewarded for four innings of outstanding relief, including a scoreless eighth and ninth, by getting the win.
James Baldwin (2-4, run) and Jeremy Rathjen got Great Lakes going in the bottom of the first with a pair of singles to begin the frame and Baldwin put his team on the board by scoring on a fielder's choice. A Corey Seager (1-3, 2 RBI) sacrifice fly in the third increased the lead to 2-0.
Sam Roberts (2-4, RBI) cut the deficit to one run with an RBI single in the fourth, but the lead was pushed back up to two thanks to a fifth inning tally by Jesmuel Valentin, who singled and later crossed home on an error.
Loons' starter Jharel Cotton was able to hold the lead for much of the night. Through five innings, he allowed just the one run on four hits, walked two and K'ed six.
Reliever Luis Meza was given the responsibility of making the score hold up when he took over for Cotton and he did his job in the sixth and seventh, but ran out of gas in the eighth and the Snappers took advantage. With one out, Renato Nunez singled and Matt Olson followed by ripping a double into left, plating Nunez. Olson was tagged out at home when the next batter, Rashun Dixon (2-4, run, 2 SB) hit into a fielder's choice, but Dixon then stole second and John Wooten knotted the game at 3-3 with a game-tying RBI single. One inning later, Robertson would un-tie it.
On Saturday, the Snappers will make their way to Lansing for the start of a three game series against the Lugnuts. The series opener pits Beloit's RHP Raul Alcantara (3-1, 3.18 ERA) against Lansing's RHP Javier Avendano (2-1, 3.91 ERA).
