Fayetteville Woodpeckers News Release
FAYETTEVILLE, NC - The Fayetteville Woodpeckers (34-44) shutout the Fredericksburg Nationals (27-52) to open the homestand in a 10-0 victory on Tuesday night at Segra Stadium. The win is the sixth shutout this season for the Woodpeckers.
Julio Robaina (W, 4-1) struck out three over his first three innings, before surrendering a leadoff double in the fourth to Ricardo Mendez. He recorded the first out on a fly out to left field, and struck out two more batters to end the inning and strand runners on the corners. The left-hander rolled through five scoreless, striking out the side in the fifth and setting a new season-high mark with eight punch outs.
Fayetteville broke up the scoreless game with a four-run third inning. Crisitan Gonzalez drew a one-out walk against Rodney Theophile (L, 1-8) and advanced to third on a double by Michael Sandle. The two-bagger was Sandle's first hit as a professional. Jordan Brewer brought home Gonzalez on a groundout to make it 1-0. Nerio Rodriguez and Joey Loperfido drew walks with two outs to load up the bases for Yainer Diaz, who connected with a bases-clearing double to push ahead 4-0.
With two outs in the fifth, Gonzalez belted his first home run for Fayetteville to extend to a 5-0 advantage. The Woodpeckers added three more runs in the sixth on an RBI groundout from Victor Mascai and a two-run single by Gonzalez to blow it open at 8-0. Brewer and Rodriguez capped the scoring with back-to-back base hits to cap it at 10-0. Brewer's singles continued his hitting streak, which now sits at 11 games, the longest of any Fayetteville player this year.
Cesar Gomez (SV, 1) emerged from the bullpen in the sixth and completed the second leg of the shutout. He struck out two in the sixth, two more in the seventh, and locked up a four-inning save with a 1-2-3 ninth inning. Gomez becomes the 11th different Woodpeckers pitcher to earn a save this season.
The series continues tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. E.T at Segra Stadium. Both starters are TBA.
