Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD - Providing himself a perfect birthday gift, Darell Hernaiz hammered a walk-off single to rightfield to propel the Delmarva Shorebirds to a 4-3 victory over the Down East Wood Ducks on Tuesday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
In a pitchers' duel early, the Shorebirds (44-34) cracked the scoreboard first against the Wood Ducks (43-35) in the third inning.
Yorkislandy Alvarez singled to open the frame before Mason Janvrin walked. Lamar Sparks then fisted a single to center to plate Alvarez and make it 1-0 Delmarva.
The score stayed that way until the sixth. With one away in the inning, Cristopher Cespedes launched a moonshot solo homer to left, his 11th of the year, to double the Delmarva lead.
Down East stormed back thanks to Delmarva miscues in the seventh. An error allowed Luisangel Acuna to reach to open the inning which was followed by a Keyber Rodriguez single. After a flyout, another error on a groundball allowed Acuna to score and put runners on first and third. Alejandro Osuna then lashed a double down the leftfield line to plate both runners and vault Down East ahead 3-2.
The Wood Ducks did not last for long as with one out in the bottom of the seventh, Sparks hammered a solo homer, his fourth of the season, to tie the game at 3-3.
In the ninth, Sparks walked with one away before swiping second base. Hernaiz then provided the heroics with a line drive single to win the game on his 20th birthday.
Jensen Elliott (2-1) earned the win in relief for the Shorebirds. He went three innings and allowed three unearned runs on three hits while striking out two.
Spencer Mraz (3-4) suffered the loss for Down East, allowing the game-winning run in two-thirds of an inning on one hit and two walks.
Jean Pinto was sensational in his home debut for the Shorebirds but did not factor into the decision. He fired six shutout frames, allowing just two hits while striking out six and retired the final 15 he faced.
Gavin Collyer began the game for Down East and also did not factor into the decision. He gave up one run in four innings on three hits and two walks, striking out five.
Sparks was electric at the plate for the Shorebirds, scoring the winning run and homering while collecting three hits. With his walk-off RBI single, Hernaiz gave the Shorebirds their first walk-off win of the season.
The Shorebirds and Wood Ducks go head-to-head again on Wednesday, August 4. Shane Davis (4-4, 6.57) takes the ball for Delmarva while John Matthews (2-3, 7.01) goes for Down East. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on MiLB.TV and Fox Sports 960 AM with Sam Jellinek on the call.
