Two Inside-The-Park Home Runs Carry Pelicans to Victory over Fireflies

August 3, 2021 - Carolina League (CarL)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

One of the rarest plays in baseball happened twice as the Myrtle Beach Pelicans hit two inside-the-park home runs on Tuesday night in their 6-4 win over the Columbia Fireflies. The series-opening win moves the Pelicans to 37-42 on the year, while the Fireflies slip to 38-40. Myrtle Beach is now within a game and a half of the second-place spot in the South Division.

Fabian Pertuz (1-4, HR, 2 RBI) hit the first home run in the second inning, and Jonathan Sierra (2-4, HR, 4 RBI) drove in four runs with a grand slam in the seventh to give the Pelicans the lead. Kevin Made (2-5) tallied his third-straight multi-hit performance in the win.

Alberto Sojo (2-0) gave up two earned runs off four hits in just a single inning of work but still manage to pick up his second win of the season. Gabriel Jaramillo took the save by throwing the final 1 1/3 innings without allowing a hit. It was his second save of the year.

Like the Pelicans, the Fireflies also collected eight hits for the game with Burle Dixon (3-4, HR, RBI) smashing three hits including a solo home run. Kale Emshoff (2-4, HR, RBI) also hit a solo homer in the defeat.

The loss went to Columbia's third pitcher Patrick Smith as he gave up four earned runs on the grand slam in his two innings pitched.

Myrtle Beach started out in front in the second inning as Jonathan Sierra singled with one out, and Ed Howard followed with another base knock to get on base, with Sierra being thrown out at third for the second out. Pertuz came up and hit a deep fly ball to left-center field, where both Diego Hernandez and Dixon collided and fell to the grass, allowing Howard and Pertuz to both score on an inside-the-park home run. The Pelicans had an early 2-0 lead.

Columbia was held off the scoreboard until the bottom of the sixth inning when Hernandez led off with a bunt single. After stealing second, Tyler Tolbert hit a triple to right field to score a run and bring the Pelicans' lead to one. Herard Gonzalez followed by hitting a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Tolbert to tie the game at two.

The Pelicans loaded the bases in the top of the seventh with Nwogu walking, Pablo Aliendo getting hit by a pitch, and Matt Warkentin drawing a two-out walk. That allowed Sierra to come up and blast a ball to right-center field, which bounced off the wall and kicked to the left side where nobody was. It would go down as Sierra's second home run of the year, and the first grand slam for Myrtle Beach this season.

Dixon responded in the bottom half by leading off with a home run off new Birds pitcher Jake Reindl to make it a 6-3 game. Emshoff homered in the bottom of the eighth with two outs, but Jaramillo would shut down the rally in the ninth to secure the 6-4 win.

Myrtle Beach and Columbia will face-off for game two of the series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m.
