Roadrunners Tie Baby Leafs

ST. JOHN'S, NFLD - The Toronto Roadrunners skated to a 4-4 tie with the St. John's Maple Leafs in a penalty filled contest on Saturday night at Mile One Stadium.

St. John's forward Kris Newbury opened the scoring when he tallied his fourth of the season at 5:58 of the first period. Tony Salmelainen, on the power play, and Doug Lynch, with his second in as many nights, then scored consecutive markers to give Toronto a 2-1 lead. St. John's would tie the game before the end of the period when Nathan Barrett potted his sixth of the season with 40 seconds remaining in the opening frame.

Roadrunners forward Nate DiCasmirro, with his tenth goal of the season, scored the lone marker of the second period. The middle frame featured 108 minutes in penalties including eight fighting majors and five game misconducts.

Toronto would take a two-goal lead when Tony Salmelainen scored his second power play goal of the game at 6:38 of the third period. St. John's forward Nathan Barrett scored his second goal of game at 13:22 to cut the Roadrunners lead to one. Greg Lakovic tied the game at 16:05 when he scored his first career AHL goal.

Roadrunners defenseman Dave Cousineau, playing in his first career AHL game, earned an assist on Salmelainen's second goal of the night.

Roadrunners defenseman Doug Lynch (1g-2a) recorded his third multipoint game of the season.

The two teams combined for a total of 137 penalty minutes, including nine major penalties and six game misconducts.

In goal, Stephen Valiquette, making his ninth straight start for the Roadrunners, made 32 saves. St. John's goaltender Mike Minard stopped 25 shots.

On the power play, Toronto was 2 for 7 while St. John's was 0 for 3.

The Toronto Roadrunners continue their seven game road swing on Wednesday, January 14, when they face the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins for the first time.

The Roadrunners next home action will take place on Sunday, January 25, when they host the Rochester Americans at 5:00 p.m.
