(Cleveland Monsters)
CLEVELAND - The Cleveland Monsters, proud American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets, were defeated by the Tucson Roadrunners in front of 11,392 fans at The Q on Friday by a final score of 5-1. With the loss, the Monsters fell to 18-29-4-3 overall this season and with a .398 points percentage remain alone in seventh place in the AHL's Central Division standings.
Tucson grabbed a 1-0 lead at 6:06 of the first period on Friday when Trevor Murphy tallied an even-strength goal before Cleveland tied the game with a five-on-five finish from Jordan Schroeder at 13:50 thanks to assists from Jacob Graves and Scott Savage.
In the middle stanza, the Roadrunners struck for four unanswered goals, including a Mario Kempe power-play strike at 7:12, an extra-man Kempe finish at 8:07, a Michael Bunting even-strength tally at 10:23, and yet another Kempe score, again on the power-play at 13:41, to take a 5-1 lead into the final frame. After a scoreless third, Tucson claimed victory by that very 5-1 margin thanks to a hat trick from Kempe and five assists from former Monster Carter Camper.
Cleveland's starting goaltender Jeff Zatkoff allowed four goals on 16 shots faced in 30-plus minutes of action to fall to 1-3-1 this season before Matiss Kivlenieks stopped six of the seven shots he faced the rest of the way. On the other side, Tucson net-minder Adin Hill improved to 14-10-2 by virtue of a 24-save performance.
Next up for the Monsters, it's a Sunday rematch vs. the Roadrunners with full coverage, live from The Q, underway at 3:00 pm on Alt 99.1 and the Monsters Hockey Network.
