SYRACUSE, NY - The Binghamton Devils were unable to hold a two-goal lead in the third period as the Syracuse Crunch came away with a 3-2 victory in front of 5,178 fans at the War Memorial on Friday night.
Nick Lappin put the Devils up in the first period with his team-leading 20th of the year. Lappin picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and beat goaltender Connor Ingram low from the right circle for the 1-0 lead. Lappin's goal came at 10:52 with the lone assist to Kevin Rooney and Binghamton took the lead into the intermision with a 9-7 shot lead.
After no scoring in the second period, the Devils cashed in on a power-play goal to take a 2-0 lead as Jacob MacDonald fired in his 15th of the year from the top of the left wing circle at 7:49 of the third. MacDonald's goal was assisted by Christoph Bertschy and Nick Lappin.
The Crunch were given a two-man advantage just after MacDonald's power-play goal and scored twice to tie the game. Matthew Peca beat Appleby over the shoulder at 10:10 of the third to keep the five-on-four power play going and then Carter Verhaeghe scored his 11th of the year at 11:21 to tie the game.
Less than two minutes later, Erik Condra scooped up a loose rebound in front of Appleby and fired it into an open net for the eventual game winner at 13:03. The Crunch held on 3-2 for the win with Appleby stopping 21 in the loss and Ingram denying 26 in the win.
