Road Warriors Take Preseason Opener in the Shootout

Greenville, SC -The South Carolina Stingrays (0-0-0-1) erased a 2-0 Greenville Road Warriors (1-0-0-0) lead in the third period, but fell in the shootout 3-2 at the Bi-Lo Center Friday night.

The Road Warriors took a 1-0 lead 1:34 into the first period when forward Justin Bowers slipped a shot past Stingrays goaltender Daren Machesney from between the faceoff circles. Bowers' first of the preseason was unassisted.

Forward Brendon Wong made it a 2-0 Road Warriors advantage at 5:26 of the second frame tapping in a rebound off the right pad of Machesney. Forward Ryan Hayes registered the lone assist. Late in the period, the Road Warriors swapped goaltenders as starter Jerry Kuhn was replaced by Jason Missiaen. Kuhn stopped all 13 Stingrays shots faced in 35:02 of work.

The Stingrays jumped on the board early in the third period with a power-play goal from forward Danick Paquette at 3:34. Forward Garrett Mitchell and defenseman Derek Keller picked up the helpers. Forward Jerry Pollastrone knotted the contest up at two by slipping a pass from forward David de Kastrozza past Missiaen at 10:50. Forward Maxime Lacroix added the second assist.

After a scoreless overtime, Bowers and Marc-Olivier Vallerand buried shootout goals for the Road Warriors and Lacroix lit the lamp for the Stingrays.

Machesney suffered the shootout loss stopping 30 of 32 Road Warriors shots. Missiaen earned the victory blocking 15 of 17 Stingrays chances in 29:58 of action. The Stingrays finished the night 1-for-7 on the power play while the Road Warriors went 0-for-2.
