In a separate transaction previously completed, the Royals added forward Chad Painchaud to the team's training camp roster after he was released from the Marlies AHL training camp. The Royals also released goaltenders John Nauta and Shane Davis from their respective tryout agreement with the team.

Caruana (6'0/187) (26), who hails from Orono, Ontario, scored eighteen goals and assisted on sixteen others (thirty-four points) in thirty-four regular season games with the Royals last season. Caruana returned to Reading at the conclusion of the AHL regular season and played all eight post-season games with the Royals, scoring four playoff goals and assisting on another. Caruana started off last season on quite a run with the Royals ringing off a team-high ten game point streak (10g-5a) from October 29 through November 11, 2010. He was the Royals leading scorer when he earned his first call-up to Toronto on December 30. Caruana's eighteen goals with Reading came on just 72 shots for a league leading 25.0% shooting percentage. Caruana, who is entering his fourth full season as a pro, has registered thirty-one points (14g-17a) in 105 total AHL games. Prior to turning pro, Caruana scored fifty-one goals and assisted on seventy-eight others (129 points) in 146 total college games at Niagara University. In his senior season, Caruana captained the Purple Eagles squad that won the College Hockey America championship and advanced to the NCAA tournament.
