WHEELING, WV - Friday night inside WesBanco Arena the Wheeling Nailers put on a show for the home fans defeating the Cincinnati Cyclones 4-1 in their preseason debut.
The Nailers controlled the game from the start when, Peter Merth scored just 44 seconds into the game to give the Nailers a 1-0 lead. Merth received the puck from Andrew Hotham at the blue line and blasted a shot over Cincinnati's Dany Taylor's right shoulder for the score. Denver Manderson received his first point of the preseason with an assist. At 17:05 of the period, Mikael Bedard received a pass from Joe Tolles on the goal line and tipped it past Taylor to give the Nailers a 2-0. The first period would end at 2-0 with the Nailers leading in shots on goal 9-7.
Sean O'Malley increased the lead in the 2nd period to 3-0 with a nice tip off of a shot by Tim Priamo that beat the Cincinnati goaltender once again. Andrew Hotham assisted on the goal giving him two points in the game. At the end of the second period the Nailers would lead in shots 19-15 and 3-0 on the scoreboard.
In the third period the teams battled on both ends of the ice until Cincinnati finally got on the board with a power play goal at 13:33. Justin Vaive deflected a shot past Patrick Killeen to pull the Cyclones to within two. With 4:18 left in the period things heated up with players on both sides jabbing at each other. The incident resulted in Mike Liambas taking two minutes for roughing and giving the Nailers their fifth power play of the night. Following the power play Zack Torquato would get his first goal of the preseason with an empty net goal to give the Nailers a 4-1 victory.
The Nailers and Cyclones will meet again on Saturday night at US Bank Arena. Game time is set for 6:30pm.
