Road Trip Begins Tonight
November 30, 2007 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Spokane Chiefs News Release
Talk about being thrown into the fire. The Spokane Chiefs begin a five game in six night road trip Friday night and they do it versus the top team in the Eastern Conference, the Calgary Hitmen,19-8-0-2 on the season. Calgary debuted this week in the CHL's top 10 rankings at number 10 and hold a two point advantage for first place in the Central Division.
The Hitmen have won seven of their last eight and are 10-4 at home in the Saddledome. Calgary's penalty kill is the best in the league (86.2%) and to top it off, they're on the ice just five times a game. In 29 games, Calgary has allowed just 19 power play goals. The Chiefs come in with the league's third best power play at 21.7% and have gone 14-47 (29.8%) on the man advantage in their last nine games.
The Chiefs have posted the league's top record with 19 wins in 25 outings, losing just three times in regulation, and are on a six game winning streak. The current stretch comes on the heels of nine in a row giving Spokane a 16-1-0-1 in its last 18 games. Others have noticed as the Chiefs are the top ranked team in the WHL thanks to the writers poll and number two in the CHL rankings.
There won't be many deep sighs of relief regarding the schedule after Friday's game as three teams on the trip are at least five games above .500, including the reigning WHL Champion Medicine Hat Tigers. The Tigers will host Spokane on Saturday night before Sunday's date versus Red Deer. The lone day off will be Monday and then the Chiefs will take on Edmonton Tuesday and Lethbridge, Wednesday.
Mike Boyle will call all the action on the Voice of the Chiefs, KJRB 790 the Fan with Comcast Hockey Tonight beginning a half-an-hour prior to each game.
