Rizzo Leads Cubs Rout in Round Rock

Round Rock, TX - Anthony Rizzo had three hits and drove in three runs to lead the Iowa Cubs (32-43) to a 12-2 win over the Round Rock Express (33-42) at Dell Diamond tonight. With the win, the Cubs tied the season series 6-6 and earned a 4-4 split of the season series in Round Rock.

The Cubs jumped out early with three runs in the top of the first off Express starter Derek Hankins (2-4). Rizzo tripled to drive in the first run and scored on a single by Blake DeWitt. Ty Wright added an RBI single later in the inning.

The Cubs broke the game open with seven runs in the top of the fourth inning against three different pitchers. Alfredo Amezaga had a double with the bases loaded to drive in three for the big hit in the inning. Blake Lalli had an RBI double, Rizzo an RBI single, and Wright walked with the bases loaded as part of the inning. The Cubs sent 12 men to the plate and the seven-run outburst marked the Cubs' biggest inning of the season.

Brett Jackson added a solo homer in the fifth inning off Johan Yan and Rizzo had an RBI double in the seventh to cap the Cubs' scoring. Rizzo finished a homer shy of the cycle while tying his season-high for hits.

Cubs' starter Chris Rusin (6-5) worked five innings and allowed two runs on seven hits to earn the victory. He stranded multiple men on base in three of his innings, including the bases loaded in the fourth. Jay Jackson allowed one hit and struck out three in three scoreless innings. Esmailin Caridad finished the game with a scoreless ninth.

The Cubs and Express shift this long series to Principal Park in Des Moines tomorrow night. Game time is 7:05. LH Zach Jackson (2-8, 5.33) will start for the Express against RH Chris Volstad (2-1, 4.78) for the Cubs. The gates will open at 5:35 and there will be pre-game fan batting practice sponsored by Scheel's. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 6:45.
