Peoria Rivermen News Release
Toledo, Ohio - The Peoria Rivermen snapped a four-game losing streak and earned their first road win of the season with a 5-2 victory on Friday night over the archrival Toledo Storm before 3,400 at the Toledo Sports Arena.
The Rivermen gave themselves their second two-goal lead of the game 6:28 into the third period. Tyler Rennette, working up the right wing, fed Randy Rowe, who broke in across the Toledo blue line, held off a defenseman as he drove to the goal and chipped his third of the season up into the right corner over Toledo goaltender Scott Fankhouser.
Peoria completed the scoring with Toledo on the power play. Rookie Troy Riddle fed Captain Trevor Baker, who worked into the Toledo zone on left wing, got to the face-off dot and whistled his second tally of the game and third of the season into the near upper corner. It was Peoria's first shorthanded goal of the year.
Peoria (3-5-2, 8 points) improved to 1-4-1 on the road and is 1-0-1 against the Storm. Toledo (5-3-3, 13 points) dropped its first regulation decision at home in four games (3-1-0).
Rivermen goaltender Alfie Michaud (2-3-1) turned away 33 of 35 shots in the win. Fankhouser (5-2-2) stopped 15 of 20 shots in the loss, as he was replaced by rookie Logan Koopmans with 7:17 left in the game.
The Rivermen took the lead to open a game for the first time this season at 15:17 of the first period. Brett Scheffelmaier, playing his first game of the season while on conditioning reassignment from the team's American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate - the Worcester IceCats, forced the play to hold the puck in the Toledo zone at the right point. Rookie Troy Riddle corralled the loose puck in the high slot and fed a breaking Scott Turner down the left side of the zone. Turner snapped a quick shot from the left face-off circle that squirted between the right arm and the torso of Fankhouser. It was Turner's second goal of the year.
Peoria made it 2-0 just 48 seconds later. Turner, stationed in the slot, sent an outlet pass behind Riddle and up the left wing boards. The puck caromed off the boards by a Toledo defenseman at center ice and into the high slot in the Toledo end, where Riddle - heading up the ice at full throttle - picked it up and worked in all alone on Fankhouser, roofing the puck into the upper right corner. It was Riddle's fourth goal of the season.
Toledo got within one at 7:15 of the second period on a bad Peoria line change. With the Rivermen heading off the ice, the Storm broke in on a 2-on-1 rush with Robert Snowball following up a Tyler Knight rebound in front of the net and hammering it by Michaud for his first tally of the season.
The Storm tied it 2-2 with 2:10 left in the second session. Along the endboards near the right wing corner, Sam Paolini fed veteran Rick Judson at the right side of the slot for a low one-time snap shot inside the left goal post. It was Judson's third goal of the season.
Peoria took its second lead of the night on the power play with just 27 seconds left in the middle stanza. Rowe whacked at a loose puck in the low shot after James Sanford fired a shot from the right point. Rowe was stopped by Fankhouser, but Baker darted in off the left wing boards to slap the puck into the open net behind Fankhouser. It's Baker's second tally of the season.
Tomorrow night - Saturday, November 20, the Rivermen host the archrival Storm in the back end of a home-and-home set between the clubs. It is Boy Scout Night. The team will wear special Boy Scout-themed jerseys to be auctioned off after the game to benefit the "Scouts Can" program. The Cutting Edge Salon of Morton will be on hand for "Haircuts for Charity" to benefit the Children's Hospital of Illinois. Game time is 7:30 p.m. CT at Carver Arena.
