Augusta Lynx News Release

A back and forth battle finally found a home in the win column for the Augusta Lynx Friday night, as they defeated the Mississippi Sea Wolves 3-1 to start a three game road trip on a positive note.

In the first period, both clubs would have their opportunities to score. The Lynx would test Sea Wolves' starter Matt Underhill with several wrist shots early, while Matus Kostur saw limited action in the Lynx end as Mississippi failed to put the puck on net often in the early going. Late in the period, a pass out in front of the Lynx net produced some confusion and a goal for Nicolas Corbeil to put the Sea Wolves ahead 1-0. Corbeil was stationed just off to the right of the Lynx net, waiting for an eventual rebound to put his club on theboard first. Anthony Battaglia and Louis Dumont picked up the assists on the goal at 18:54.

Augusta's power play came to life in the second period, allowing the Lynx to tie the game on a goal by Louis Goulet at 3:11. Goulet picked the puck up at the point, skated into the high slot, and beat SeaWolves goaltender Matt Underhill on the left side to notch a point in his seventh consecutive game. Terry Marchant and Jamie Johnson picked up the helpers on the goal, knotting the contest at 1-1. Later, Jarrett Thompson's drive hit the very tip of Underhill's glove, landing behind him in the blue paint but short of crossing the goal line before the Mississippi netminder recovered to smother the puck, thwarting the Augusta scoring chance. Physical play was also a mark of the second period, including Lawne Snyder's big hit on Louis Dumont in the Lynx zone as Dumont tried to cut to the slot, where Snyder lowered the boom. Shots on goal in the period totaled 17-9 for Augusta.

In the third period, both teams had chances to break the deadlock, each time stymied by goaltending and defense. Finally Rod Sarich broke through, taking a Matt Schmidt pass at the blue line and wristing a low shot through the pads of Underhill to give the Lynx the lead. Ken Magowan picked up the second assist on the play at 7:58 of the third period. But Mississippi continued to press, and a late high sticking call against Steve Munn put the Lynx down a man with just 2:19 to go. Augusta would band together to ward off the late power play, even when the Sea Wolves pulled their goaltender for the extra man with 1:30 remaining. Finally back at full strength, Chris Hajt fed Jarrett Thompson on a break out of the zone with time running out, and Thompson escorted the puck down the ice for his first goal of the year into an empty net at 19:58 for a 3-1 final. Kostur stops 34 shots for the win, his second of the year as the Lynx improve to 4-4-1 on the year. Underhill stopped 32 in taking the loss for the Sea Wolves, who dropped to 4-6-1.

The Lynx will travel to Louisiana to take on the IceGators tomorrow night, with the pre-game show starting with Tom Callahan at 7:35 pm on NEWSTALKSPORTS 1630 AM. After Saturday night the club will return to Mississippi for a Sunday matinee game at 6:05 pm Eastern Standard Time.
