Peoria Rivermen News Release

Peoria, Ill. (March 26, 2005) – Alfie Michaud pushed his Rivermen records for shutouts in one season and a career to six and seven, respectively, as the Peoria Rivermen beat the Wheeling Nailers 3-0 before 6,656 on Saturday night at Carver Arena.

Michaud (26-10-4) stopped four Wheeling shots in the first period, 10 in the second and eight in the final session for a 22-save performance.

Team-leading scorer Brian McCullough added an insurance tally, his second goal of the contest, with 3:23 left in regulation. Reggie Stringer took a dump-in behind the Wheeling net and waited for a play to develop in front. McCullough swept in off the right-wing boards to the post, sneaking in on Wheeling goaltender Andy Chiodo and quickly tapping a Stringer pass through the legs.

Peoria (36-22-7, 79 points) has won four in a row overall and pushed its season-best home winning streak to 10 games. The Rivermen, who have held the opposition to two goals or less in 21 of the last 37 games, finished their regular season series with the Nailers with a 4-4-1 mark. Wheeling (36-24-5, 77 points) is winless in its last two games (0-1-1) and dropped to 15-15-3 on the road.

Chiodo (8-7-2) turned away 35 of 38 Rivermen shots in the loss.

Peoria dominated the first period, outshooting the Nailers 12-4 and taking a 1-0 lead to the first intermission. The scoring play began after Tyler Rennette fed rookie Patrick Wellar at the left point. Wellar rifled a low shot toward the Wheeling goal that was turned away by Chiodo on a right pad stop, but Rivermen Captain Trevor Baker crashed the left post and slipped the puck in behind Chiodo. It was Baker's 15th tally of the season and second in as many nights.

The Rivermen made it 2-0 early in the second period. Chris Bogas, stationed at the right point, chipped the puck down low to Igor Valeev, who was anchored along the endboards just off the right corner. Valeev quickly laced a tape-to-tape pass to McCullough, who circled into the slot and slapped a low shot inside the left post. It was his team-leading 34th tally on the year and first of two on the night.

On Wednesday, March 30, the Rivermen open up a four-city, six-game road trip against the Trenton Titans. Game time is 6:00 p.m. CT at the Sovereign Bank Arena.
