Louisiana IceGators News Release
Lafayette, LA - The Mississippi Sea Wolves clinched a spot in the Kelly Cup playoffs with a dominating 7-2 win over the Louisiana IceGators, Saturday night in the Cajundome.
In a lackluster first period, the Sea Wolves scored early and late to take a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes. At 3:23, a Gators defensive zone turnover wound up on the stick of Mike Martone. The veteran defenseman cut toward the net from the right side and beat new goaltender, Lance Mayes, with a wrist shot for a 1-0 lead. Lucas Drake getting the only assist on Martone's 3rd of the season. Drake capped the period with a 3 on 1 goal scored with only 6.2 seconds left in the period. Drake took the puck on the right side and buried it, blocker side, on Mayes for his 6th of the year.
The Sea Wolves blew the game open with 3 more goals in the 2nd period. At 4:18, on a 2 on 1, Jay Legault made it 3-0 Mississippi with his 16th of the season. At 9:36, it was Legault scoring his 2nd of the night, his 17th, on a breakaway to make the score 4-0. The biggest highlight of the night for Louisiana came at 12:56 of the 3rd, when Chris Thompson hit Wes Mason at the far post for a one time tap in. It was Mason's 30th goal of the season, the first time in his career that Mason has scored 30 goals with one team in the same campaign. Patrik Nilson followed 20 seconds later with a wrist shot over the glove of Phil Sauve for his 6th of the year to make the final score 7-2.
With the loss, Louisiana's record is now 22-37-5, 50 points and 5th place in the South. The Gators were outshot by Mississippi 31-30. Power plays were 0-4 for the Gators and 0-9 for the Wolves.
