Peoria Rivermen News Release

Peoria, Il – Try as they might, the Peoria Rivermen were not able to score over the final two periods on 21 shots, falling to the archrival Toledo Storm 2-1 on Friday night before a crowd of 4,569 at Carver Arena.

Toledo rookie goaltender Logan Koopmans (5-4-1) stopped 12 shots in the second and nine in the final period. On the night, Koopmans (5-4-1) stopped a total of 29 shots.

With the defeat, Peoria's season-best, four-game winning streak was snapped, while Toledo ended a season-worst, three-game losing skid.

The Rivermen (7-10-3, 17 points) dropped to 4-5-2 on home ice this year and fell to 2-2-1 against the Storm after five of a season-high 11 meetings on the year. Toledo (10-8-3, 23 points) improved to 5-3-3 away from the Toledo Sports Arena.

Peoria rookie goaltender Chris Beckford-Tseu (5-7-1) turned away 31 of 33 shots in defeat, as his personal four-game winning streak was brought to an end.

Toledo took a 1-0 lead right off a face-off in the Rivermen zone midway through the first period. Sam Paolini, Toledo's newly-named Captain, jumped around a check along the right-wing boards and snapped a shot into the near upper right corner at 10:35. The goal was Paolini's eighth of the season.

The Rivermen tied the game 1-1 with just 37 seconds remaining in the first. After taking a big hit along the boards, Brian McCullough fed Joe Pereira in the right-wing corner of the Toledo zone, and then Pereira sent a feed across the ice to a breaking Randy Rowe, who slipped a second effort inside the left goal post. It was Rowe's second goal in as many games and sixth on the season.

The Storm took their second lead of the game at 7:49 of the middle session. Tomas Micka broke into the Rivermen zone on right wing, pulling up at the top of the face-off circle and sending a cross-ice feed to the top of the left face-off circle. Tyler Knight caught up with the puck and wristed in his team-leading ninth tally of the season, beating Beckford-Tseu waist-high inside the left goal post. The goal proved to be the game winner.

Tomorrow night – Saturday, December 18, the Rivermen face off against the Wheeling Nailers in the first of two in a row between the clubs at WesBanco Arena. Game time is 6:30 p.m. CT.
