Gulls Win First-Ever Game In Canada, 2-1

December 17, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release

VICTORIA, British Columbia – Brian Gornick supplied all the offense with two goals while goaltender Eddy Ferhi did the rest, leading the San Diego Gulls to a 2-1 victory over the Victoria Salmon Kings Friday night at Bear Mountain Arena. It was San Diego's third straight win and first-ever game in Canada.

The Gulls (12-7-2) just came off a very successful homestand, but they've had their problems on road thus far. They entered the night with a three-game road losing streak and only one win overall away from San Diego. Friday was the first of a six-game road trip and thanks to Gornick's pair of goals and Ferhi's solid goaltending, the trek is off to a good start.

Ferhi, playing in his second straight game, was sharp all night long and finished the game with 34 saves. In his two games since being assigned from the American Hockey League's Cincinnati Mighty Ducks, the 6-foot-3-inch netminder is 2-0-0 with a .944 save percentage.

Gornick got things started for the Gulls, giving them an early 1-0 lead 10:42 into the first period. Sylvain Deschatelets pried the puck loose behind the Victoria net and sent a centering feed to Gornick, who banged it past Salmon King netminder Jason Stone for his first goal of the night.

Victoria (6-12-3) drew even 5:38 into the second period on a power-play goal from Ryan Wade. The Salmon Kings were working the puck inside the San Diego zone and it eventually came to Seth Leonard, whose initial shot was saved by San Diego goaltender Eddy Ferhi. Wade, however, jumped on the loose rebound and jammed it home for his seventh marker of the year.

Gornick regained the Gulls' lead at the 10:51 mark of the second, off another nice setup from Deschatelets. Moments after a Salmon Kings penalty expired, Deschatelets grabbed the puck in the high slot and then whipped it to an open Gornick. The San Diego winger, who entered the day with only one goal in his previous 11 games, took the pass and flipped a backhander over Stone for his second goal of the night – sixth of the season.

San Diego clamped down defensively in the third period, thwarting any kind of sustained Victoria attack. And when the Salmon Kings did register a scoring chance, Ferhi was right there to shut the door.
