Titans Fall Short to Wheeling, 3-2
December 17, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Trenton Devils News Release
TRENTON, NJ â After 40 minutes of play, the Trenton Titans trailed 3-0 to the Wheeling Nailers, but ultimately lost a 3-2 thriller in front of 4,038 fans at Sovereign Bank Arena.
The defeat breaks a six game unbeaten streak, and keeps them out of sole possession of first place in the North Division for at least one more night. It was just one of those nights for the Titans, as they outshot the Nailers 42-18, but never had control of the game.
Special teams were critical early in the contest, as the Nailers notched a power play goal 14:53 into the first period when Wheeling winger Steve Crampton punched a rebound by the pads of Andrew Allen to give his team the early lead.
Neither team scored again in the first. However, the Nailers carried their momentum into the second scoring and even-strength goal with, at the 3:01 mark, to secure a two-goal lead. Lazarev found the top of the Titans net, flicking an Armands Berzins pass of the shoulder of Trenton's Allen with a wrist shot.
Late in the second, the Titans yielded the Nailers third goal on a short-handed opportunity to Crampton on as break-away opportunity â finishing with a quick far-side wrist shot, for his second goal of the evening (14:22).
The Titans finally hit their stride in the third, needing three goals to send the game beyond regulation, and getting two. Brent Robinson's goal, a one-timer (6:10), assisted by Rick Kowalsky and Conor Dunlop got the Titans on the board. But, despite Mathieu Brunelle's tally with 3:02 remaining, the effort was too late.
The Titans host the first place Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies on Saturday, December 18 at 7:00 pm.
