March 22, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Mississippi RiverKings News Release
The Mississippi RiverKings have qualified for the Central Hockey League's Ray Miron President's Cup Playoffs with tonight's 6-2 win over the Corpus Christi Rayz at the DeSoto Civic Center.
In the first period, Darrell Stoddard scored his sixth goal of the season and Ryan Held scored his 28th to give the RiverKings an early 2-0 lead. Nicklas Lindberg netted his 14th of the year early in the second period to cut the RiverKings' lead in half, but Louis Dumont restored the two-goal cushion with his 16th on the campaign.
The Rayz didn't quit in the second, as Jay Latulippe lit his 14th lamp of the year to make it 3-2. However, Aaron Davis scored on a power play for his 21st goal of the year to give the RiverKings a 4-2 lead after two.
Woollard scored his 36th and Rick Kozak scored his 24th in the third period to reserve the RiverKings' seat on the playoff train.
Sebastien Centomo made 20 saves for the RiverKings. Brad Smith made 30 saves for the Rayz.
The RiverKings can still finish in fourth or fifth position in the Northern Conference. They will play either the Texas Brahmas or the Youngstown SteelHounds in an opening-round best-of-three series beginning on Monday. However, their opponent and the sites of the individual games remain unknown. The other games will take place on Wednesday and, if necessary, Thursday.
The RiverKings now have 80 points and remain in fifth place. The SteelHounds defeated the Colorado Eagles tonight 7-4 to retain fourth place with 81 points. The Brahmas tonight lost to the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs 7-1, so they still have 82 points after failing to clinch third place.
The RiverKings host the Rayz again tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. The pre-game show begins at 6:55 p.m. on Y96.1FM. As for the SteelHounds, they host the Eagles one last time at 6:05 p.m. The Brahmas visit the Austin Ice Bats at 7:38 p.m.
