
Bes Sets Another Record: Bucks Win Finale 6-2

HIDALGO, TX- The Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League closed out their 2007-08 regular season by beating the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees 6-2 Saturday night, in front of a sellout crowd of 5,535 fans at the Dodge Arena. Laredo closes out the regular season on a three game winning streak, and will finish with a 42-19-3 record (87 points). Laredo will now await the winner of the first round series between the fourth seed (New Mexico/Odessa) and Austin. Game one of the Bucks playoff run will be Saturday March 29th on "Pack the House for Charity Night".
Jeff Bes etched his name on another Bucks record in the third period. Bes became the Bucks all-time leader in single season goals scored with 46. Bes past former linemate Chris Grenville to set the record. Bes took a pass a the left side of the crease and sent a shot past Bees goaltender David Lemanowicz. Bes will find out Monday if he will win his second CHL MVP award.
The first period looked like a regular season finale with not a lot of action. Niether team lit the lamp as game was scoreless after 20 minutes. Laredo outshot Rio 10-8 in the period.
Laredo had a couple of good scoring chances in the period,with Lemanowicz making some keys saves.
The Bucks would jump out in front of the Bees just eight seconds into the second period as they tallied their league-leading 20th short handed goal of the season. Alex Goupil broke free off of the opening face off past the Bees defense, and stuffed a back hander by Lemanowicz, giving Laredo a 1-0 lead. It was Goupil's 23rd tally of the season.
Laredo would make it 2-0 with 5:20 left in the second period when they tallied another special teams goal, this time on the power-play. Steve Weidlich sent a slap shot from the left face off dot past Lemanowicz. Weidlich's shot bounced off the crossbar then trickled over the goal line. It was Weidlich's third goal of the year, giving him a two-game goal streak. Goupil and Paul Elliott picked up assists on Weidlich's goal.
The Bucks (18-12-2 on the road) outshot the Bees in the period 17-5.
Laredo would score four times in the third period, with Bes (46th), Chris Stanley (4th), Goupil (2nd of night, 24th of season), and Alex Penner tallying goals.
Rio would tally twice in the third, with Jason Slusher and Rob Voltera scoring for the Killer Bees.
The Bucks would finish four-for-six on the power-play on the night, as they close out the season series with Rio with a 12-1 record (6-1 at the Dodge Arena).
John Ceci would pick up even his Bucks record to 7-7, as he set aside 24 of 26 Killer Bee shots. The Bucks outshot the Bees 46-24. Lemanowicz was saddled with the loss, he set aside 39 of 45 Laredo shots.
