(Southaven, MS) - The Mississippi RiverKings scored four times in the first period on their way to a 5-3 victory over the Wichita Thunder Friday night at the DeSoto Civic Center. With the victory plus Rapid City's loss to Tulsa, the RiverKings clinched a CHL Northern Conference playoff spot, becoming the second team to clinch a post-season position this season.

Mississippi scored four times before Wichita could get on the scoreboard. Two of the goals came in the space of 13 seconds, as Louis Dumont scored at 2:34, followed by Bobby Chaumont adding a goal at 2:47. Chaumont scored again at 3:13 for his 27th red-lighter of the year and a 3-0 lead. That was followed by a Matt Summers red-lighter at 8:04 for a 4-0 RiverKings advantage.

Joel Hanson finished the first period scoring with a goal for Wichita at the 9:27 mark for the 4-1 Mississippi lead after twenty minutes of play.

Each team traded goals in the second period. Garrett Larson opened the middle frame scoresheet with his 20th goal of the year at the 2:53 mark in the period for a 5-1 RiverKings' lead, but Wichita answered with a shorthanded goal scored by Chris Shudo at 5:39 for a 5-2 second intermission score in favor of the RiverKings.

Brad Thompson's goal at 13:39 for Wichita finished the scoring for the night.

Neither team scored on the power play, but the RiverKings out shot the Thunder by a 42-20 margin, including an 18-6 margin in the second period for Mississippi.

Fans who attended the game were able to have their hair cut with the hair donations going to Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center's "Locks of Love" program.
