Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release

HIDALGO, Texas---Boosted by the return of Trevor Weisgerber (1-1-2) the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees got two goals from Evan Rankin (2-0-2) and 24 saves from netminder Wylie Rogers en route to a 4-2 win over the New Mexico Scorpions Friday night at Dodge Arena.

With the win and Laredo's loss tonight to Texas the Killer Bees are now four points behind the Bucks for third place in the Southern Conference.

Neil Trimm started things off for New Mexico with a goal at the 3:57 mark in the first, but Rankin struck back at 8:40. Rankin wrapped around from behind the net on a delayed penalty and beat Scorpions goalie Kyle McNulty on the glove side for his first of the night. Weisgerber then connected at 11:55 giving RGV a 2-1 lead to end the opening stanza. Weisgerber, in his first game since November 29, also assisted on Rankin's first goal.

Aaron Lee put Rio up 3-1 on a shorthanded goal and the eventual game-winner at 17:48 in the second with the helper from Zak McClellan, but Tom Maldonado fired back just a minute later at 18:55 to pull New Mexico back within one going into the final period.

It was Rankin with his second of the night at 8:59 in the third period, with the help of Jesse Bennefield and Ryan Shmyr, that sealed the win for RGV.

Rio returns home tomorrow where they face the Oklahoma City Blazers for the first time this season with game time set for 7:35 p.m. The Killer Bees will celebrate the best and worst of the 1980's and will hand out mustaches to the first 2500 fans. KRGV's Tim Smith will also be inducted into the RGV Chapter of the Golden Duster Society during a first intermission ceremony.
