Rage Withstand Eagles Rally

February 20, 2009 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Rocky Mountain Rage News Release

Loveland, Colo. - The Rocky Mountain Rage successfully weathered a Colorado Eagles rally during the final five minutes of the third period to capture a 4-3 victory behind two goals from Scott Wray. The win marked the Rage's first in six tries this year against the Northwest Division's first-place team, which was sent to its fourth consecutive regulation loss for the first time in its six-year history.

After single goals in the each of the first two periods, Rocky Mountain took a 3-0 lead mid-way through the third when defenseman Nick Harloff pounced on a rebound with the club on the power play at 9:51. It looked as if the Rage would cruise the rest of the way until Ed McGrane went top shelf at 15:05 to spoil the shutout bid of Scott Reid, who made 39 stops on the evening. Scott Polaski scored just 28 seconds later, and all of a sudden the Eagles were within 3-2 with still 4:27 to play.

Rocky Mountain appeared to then put the game away when Simon Watson was sprung on a two-on-one with Wray, who scored his second of the night at 17:18. But the Rage would need that insurance marker as at 19:09 with the goaltender pulled in favor of an extra attacker, Konrad Reeder knocked a centering pass out of mid-air to pull Colorado back within one. Again the Eagles pulled goaltender Andrew Penner and skated six-on-four with the benefit of a penalty over the final nine seconds, but David Morelli cleared the puck out of trouble in the waning moments to finally secure the victory for Rocky Mountain.

Wray scored his first goal of the night at 14:10 of the first off another two-on-one with Watson. Watson tallied unassisted at 3:13 of the middle period to give the visitors a 2-0 edge heading to the third. With three points (1g-2a), Watson extended his Rage season-high point streak to 11 straight games (10g-7a), which is currently the longest streak in the league.

Rocky Mountain won its third straight road game for the first time this year to run its record to 27-21-4 with 58 points. The club is now within six points of fourth place in the Northern Conference after the Oklahoma City Blazers lost earlier in the evening to the Corpus Christi IceRays.
