RiverDogs Final Homestand Begins August 20

CHARLESTON - Following the team's final eight-game road trip of the 2008 season, the Charleston RiverDogs return home one last time to the friendly confines of Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park for a nine-game homestand in an eight-day span.

First, the RiverDogs host the Columbus Catfish, a Tampa Bay Rays affiliate, for a unique six-game set from August 20-24, then the Savannah Sand Gnats, a New York Mets affiliate, from August 25-27 to close the curtain on the home portion of the campaign.

First pitch for each contest is 7:05 p.m. unless otherwise noted.

Wednesday, Aug. 20 opens the six-game series against Columbus in a five-day span and marks another ALL-U-CAN-EAT Wild Wednesday at The Joe, presented by Q104.5 FM, with a rib-sticking eat and drink special for only $20 in the Ashley View Pub.

It is also You Could Win Night! presented by AT&T/Carolina Wireless in which one lucky fan that night has a chance to walk away with $10,000 in cold-hard cash. Nine fans will be chosen from each of the Lowcountry AT&T dealers and assigned one inning apiece. For each run scored in that respective inning, the fan will receive a baseball to heave into a designated target after the game is over. If no runs are scored during an inning, the fan automatically receives three baseballs. After the game, each fan has the opportunity to throw their earned baseballs into that target and must convert three throws successfully to win the $10K.

Also, the RiverDogs are spearheading Project Cool Breeze initiative, which provides elderly citizens in the Lowcountry with air conditioning and cooling units to help them combat the sweltering summer days in Charleston. Riley Park will serve as a drop-off point on this night for any air conditioners, fans or cash donations that fans would like to offer for use by our area seniors. Thursday, Aug. 21 is the last Thirsty Thursday of the season and is presented by Market Street Saloon, 95SX and WTAT-Fox 24 with $1 food and drink specials in the Ashley View Pub all evening. Due to an earlier rainout, this game will be a doubleheader at Riley Park with Game One's first pitch scheduled for 6:05 p.m. Gates open for this game at 5 p.m.

Between the first and second games, the long-awaited Midget Wrestling makes its triumphant return to The Joe. The ring will be set up in Margaritaville down the left-field line next the RiverDogs' Kids' Zone and the match is usually a fan-favorite.

Friday, Aug. 22 is a Force Protection Red Shirt Friday presented by Force Protection Industries, Inc. and WEZL. Fans that wear red to the game that night receive $1 off the regular ticket price at the box office, and then have the option to donate that $1 to area service men and women in the armed forces. The RiverDogs will be wearing their special-made Friday red jerseys once more, and the uniform tops will be auctioned off as part of an in-game, shirt-off-the-back promotion with all proceeds benefiting military families fighting overseas.

It is also a renewal of an earlier promotion, as the RiverDogs salute our service men and women in Military Appreciation Night No. 2. All military personnel that show their ID at the box office receive a free ticket for the game. It will be a fitting occasion to celebrate the selfless sacrifice of so many for the sake of our nation on a night that the RiverDogs literally give the shirt off their back to help those who have given of themselves in order for us to enjoy our freedom and our nation's pastime.

Saturday, Aug. 23 is highlighted by the Ken Carrington Bobblehead Giveaway to the first 1,000 fans to click through the turnstiles presented by Hutto Refrigeration. The RiverDogs' celebrated PA announcer, who was the victor of the Ballpark Icon Bobblehead Vote earlier this season, will be honored all evening culminating in Ken receiving his very own Charleston RiverDogs jersey as the in-stadium voice of the franchise.

It will be a night of fan participation for Fancaster Night presented by & WCIV ABC News 4. The RiverDogs will select nine lucky fans that sent in their application for the Fancaster contest, with each person having the opportunity to broadcast one inning of play-by-play action in the press box. After the game, fans can vote for their favorite voice at The winner of the site vote will be announced during the final home game of the season on GEICO Fan Appreciation Day on Aug. 27, with the winner being placed in final consideration for a potential radio position within The Goldklang Group.

Sunday, Aug. 24, concludes the Columbus series with a 4:05 p.m. first pitch and is the last Family Sunday of the season presented by Magic 107.3 FM, the Charleston County Parks & Recreation Center & MUSC Sports Medicine. In addition to pregame catch on the field, fans can also get autographs from the RiverDogs players, manager and coaches.

It will also be SUDIA Dairy Day presented by SUDIA, with the RiverDogs hosting WCBD's Brad Franko to defend his cow milking championship during pregame ceremonies.

Monday, Aug. 25 waves the green flag on the three-game Savannah series on a Dogs With a Cause Night presented by Star 99.7 FM. On this night, the RiverDogs partner with Crisis Ministries, a local non-profit organization, to generate funds and exposure for their cause.

Lowcountry inhabitants can help take a stand on CPAD Night. CPAD (Citizens Patrol Against Drugs) will be highlighted during the contest with PA announcements pertaining to the organization's community involvement.

Tuesday, Aug. 26 is a BI-LO Two for Tuesday presented by BI-LO, B-92 and The CW with two-for-one discounts available on upper reserve, lower reserve and general admission seats. In addition to showing your BI-LO, B-92 or The CW identification at the box office for the discount, fans can also wear red to the park and receive the discount, due to the fact that it is MUSC Go Red for Women Night at The Joe. MUSC will be present that evening with vital information on how to promote heart health through proper eating and exercise habits.

Wednesday, Aug. 27 is the final home game of the 2008 season and is highlighted by GEICO Fan Appreciation Night presented by GEICO and all the RiverDogs' media partners. Throughout the game, the RiverDogs are giving away prizes every inning including jerseys, team autographed baseballs and bats, cash, and much, much more.

The RiverDogs and GEICO will also select the MVP fan of the season that will be awarded the brand new Jet Ski, which was graciously donated by Charleston Power Sports. A new fan has been drawn for each and every game this season, and the winner of the Jet Ski is chosen from that select group. The ALL-U-CAN-EAT Wild Wednesday makes one last appearance at The Joe, and this time offers the title Thirsty Wednesday, with $1 food and drink specials in the Ashley View Pub all evening long to go with the $20 no-holds-barred buffet assortment.

Fans will also have one last opportunity to go on the field to get autographs and take pictures with the 2008 Charleston RiverDogs.

The last road trip of the 2008 regular season is a five-game set that begins on Aug. 28 with a two-game series against the Rome Braves, an Atlanta Braves affiliate, at State Mutual Stadium in Rome, Ga., and concludes with a three-game series against Savannah at Historic Grayson Stadium from Aug. 30-Sept. 1.
