Charleston RiverDogs News Release
Carmen Angelini drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 11th inning - West Virginia's 13th base on balls issued in the game - to hand the Charleston RiverDogs a 9-8 come-from-behind victory over the Power in South Atlantic League action Monday night in front of 2,773 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
Austin Romine went 4-for-5 with a walk, a two-run home run and two doubles to lead the charge as Charleston erased deficits of four runs and two runs to get the victory.
With the victory, the RiverDogs salvage a split in the four-game series and improve to 10-13 in the season's second half and 55-38 overall while the Power slip to 18-7 since the All-Star break and 50-44 on the season.
Romine led off the 11th with a double to center and was sacrificed to third base by Matt Morris. West Virginia pitcher Corey Frerichs (4-7) then issued two consecutive intentional walks to Dave Williams and Austin Krum to load the bases, before Angelini was credited with the winning RBI on four consecutive pitches outside the strike zone.
The game saw the Power defense commit five errors in addition to the pitching staff's 13 walks. The RiverDogs' pitchers fanned 15 West Virginia batters.
Jonathan Ortiz earned the win for Charleston in relief to even his record at 2-2 while pitching the final two innings and scattering a pair of hits and striking out four.
The game was tied 8-8 at the end of nine innings.
The Power got on the scoreboard first with two runs in the second inning. With Zelous Wheeler on second after a single and a stolen base, left fielder Anderson De La Rosa belted a 1-2 pitch from Charleston starter Dellin Betances over the left field fence for a two-run home run.
Charleston came back with a run in the bottom of the second after the first two batters went down swinging, including Brandon Laird, who was ejected after arguing a check-swing third-strike call. Krum then drew a walk and advanced to second on failed pickoff throw by Power starter Evan Frederickson, who then issued a base on balls to Angelini.
Krum advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored on a throwing error by catcher Eric Fryer.
Up 2-1 in the third, West Virginia added another run against Betances when Eric Farris doubled to right and the Power loaded the bases with back-to-back hit-by-pitches. Then as Wheeler grounded into a double play, Farris scored to give the visitors a 3-1 advantage.
But the RiverDogs came back to pull within one run, 3-2, in the third when Frederickson could not locate the strike zone. The bases were loaded on three consecutive one-out walks, and then Abraham Almonte, who was issued the first walk in the inning, scored on a wild pitch.
Frederickson's three innings of work were a tad unusual as the southpaw held the RiverDogs hitless, but walked six batters, fanned four and recorded three official wild pitches. He was replaced in the fourth by Michael Bowman.
West Virginia added three more runs in the fifth. Farris led off with an infield single, stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error by Romine, the RiverDogs' catcher, and scored on Fryer's RBI single to left.
Charleston manager Torre Tyson then removed Betances from the mound in favor of Chace Vacek, who quickly got two outs. However, Vacek yielded a two-run home run to left field by Steffan Wilson, his 15th round-tripper of the year, to make the score 6-2.
Charleston exploded for four runs to knot the score at 6-6, sending eight batters to the plate in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Prilys Cuello drew a walk and moved to second when Almonte reached on an error. Bradley Suttle then drove home two runs with a double and moved to third on Romine's infield single.
With runners on first and third, Jesus Montero doubled home Suttle and Romine scored on a relay throw error from Farris, the Power's second baseman. All told, the RiverDogs scored four runs on three hits and two costly West Virginia errors.
West Virginia broke the tie in the sixth against Vacek when Matt Cline was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on Lee Haydel's RBI single to right to make the score 7-6.
The Power extended their lead to 8-6 in the seventh on three consecutive one-out singles by Wheeler, Wilson and an RBI single by De La Rosa against the RiverDogs' third pitcher Noel Castillo.
But Charleston came right back in the bottom of the seventh to knot the score once more, this time against Power reliever Mike Ramlow. With one out, Suttle singled and then Romine blasted a two-run home run over the dead center field wall. It was Romine's fourth home run of the season, all coming after the All-Star break.
The RiverDogs had 10 hits on the night led by Romine going 4-for-5 with two RBI. Suttle aided the cause with a pair of hits.
West Virginia recorded 14 hits with Farris paving the way with three. Wheeler, Wilson, De La Rosa and Cline each had two knocks.
Betances, who pitched four innings and faced two batters in the fifith, allowed five runs on seven hits while striking out six, walking one and drilling two.
The RiverDogs enjoy a rare day off Tuesday and then head out for an eight-game road trip to Kannapolis and Greensboro. Righty Jairo Heredia (4-3, 2.91 ERA) will get the mound call on Wednesday for Charleston while Kannapolis counters with righty Levi Maxwell (9-2, 3.27 ERA).
