Charleston RiverDogs News Release

CHARLESTON, SC - RiverDogs starter Brandon Braboy tossed six complete innings of one-run baseball in pacing the Charleston to a 2-1 victory over the Rome Braves in South Atlantic League action Thursday night in front of 2,962 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

The game was played under protest by RiverDogs skipper Torre Tyson when, in the third inning, Rome catcher Matt Kennelly allegedly picked up a foul ball with his mask, which by rule would have resulted in a three-base advancement.

With the victory, Charleston improves to 65-62 on the season (26-31 second half), while Rome falls to 62-65 overall (27-30 second half). The RiverDogs took two of the three games in the series.

Braboy (4-5), a former 21st round selection by the Yankees, permitted just four hits in those six innings while walking one and fanning two to pick up his second victory as a starter. The right-hander retired nine of the final 10 batters he faced in the triumph and also got nine groundouts during his performance.

Rome scored first for the third straight night to take a 1-0 lead in the third inning off Braboy. Derek Wiley doubled to right, Kuyaunnis Miles was hit by a pitch, and then both players moved up on Ryan Barba's sacrifice bunt. Wiley would then score on a wild pitch with Shayne Moody batting for the Braves lone run.

The RiverDogs began their attack in the fourth inning off Rome starting pitcher Randall Delgado. Melky Mesa reached on an infield single to begin the frame, but Delgado was removed after the at-bat with an apparent injury. Right-hander Yeliar Castro came in and promptly allowed the game-tying RBI single to Taylor Grote for a 1-1 score.

Charleston seized the lead, 2-1, later in the inning on a two-out RBI single to centerfield by Ray Kruml.

Manny Banuelos relieved Braboy, spinning a dominating two innings while surrendering one hit and striking out five of the six batters he faced. Luke Prihoda earned his first SAL save getting Samuel Sime to line out to second baseman Jose Pirela with the tying run at first base in the ninth.

Castro (4-4) was saddled with the loss giving up two runs in two relief innings.

Charleston again out-hit Rome, 9-6, with Mesa and Kruml each collecting a pair. In addition, Abraham Almonte extended his hitting streak to a career-high 18 games with a seventh-inning single. No Brave recorded more than one hit.
