Wild Suns Loss Completes Winless Series

Hagerstown Suns News Release

HAGERSTOWN, MD -- The Hagerstown Suns (18-38) allowed four unearned runs to the Lakewood BlueClaws (30-27) in a first inning that featured an error, a balk, a bunt strikeout, an ejection, a hit by pitch, and a passed ball -- just the beginning of a highly eventful 7-2 Suns loss at Municipal Stadium on Thursday night.

The BlueClaws were on their way to completing a three-game sweep of the Suns with their very first batter, as Anthony Gose reached on a throwing error, stole second, and took third on a balk. The game was then interrupted by the ejection of Lakewood's Harold Garcia -- who was called out bunting foul with two strikes on a pitch that he claimed hit him -- but the BlueClaws carried on undeterred, delivering three run-scoring singles to take a 4-0 lead.

The Suns picked up a run in the bottom of the first when second baseman Steve Lombardozzi tripled home left fielder Valerio Heredia, but three outs later, Lombardozzi remained stranded at first.

Prior to the start of the third inning, the game was put on hold for 22 minutes due to a lighting malfunction at Municipal Stadium, but even the delay could not stop the BlueClaws, who picked up another run in the third after the Suns let two routine pop-ups drop to the field.

More Hagerstown miscues followed in the fourth, as a passed ball by catcher Derek Norris, the first error of the season by rightfielder Charlie Fermaint, and a wild pitch by starter A.J. Morris (0-3) resulted in Lakewood's final two runs of the game.

Suns relievers Chris Lugo, Carlos Peralta, and Chris Rivera calmed things down over the final five and a third innings of the game, shutting out the BlueClaws on just five hits. Hagerstown picked up its second run of the game -- and just its third of the series -- in the eighth inning, on the strength of two wild pitches by Lakewood reliever Jordan Ellis. In just two innings of work, Ellis piled up three walks, hit two batters, and uncorked five wild pitches.

Lombardozzi and designated hitter Robby Jacobsen were the only Suns with hits in the game - picking up two apiece - but Hagerstown did accumulate ten walks. The Suns went one-for-15 with runners in scoring position, however, and left 13 runners on base.
