Bridgeport Islanders News Release
BRIDGEPORT, CT - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, lost 6-1 at home Wednesday to the Albany River Rats who broke a 1-1 deadlock with five third-period goals.
Albany opened the scoring in the first period on the power play when Tuomas Pihlman squeaked a shot under Sound Tigers goalie Wade Dubielewicz off assists from Peter Vrana and Bobby Allen at 14:03.
The Sound Tigers evened the score at 1-1 when Matt Koalska fed a pass from behind the net to David Masse who wristed his 12th goal of the season past River Rats netminder Frank Doyle with 5:42 left in the middle frame. Masi Marjamaki also assisted on the play. Referee Jamie Koharski initially waived off the goal but eventually awarded the tally after conferring with the goal judge.
Albany's leading scorer Aleksander Suglobov quickly put the game out of reach with his team-best 24th and 25th goals, both on delayed penalties and both off assists from Nicklas Bergfors, to make it 3-1 River Rats early in the third period. Suglobov made it 2-1 at the 3:40 mark and doubled the lead to 3-1 just 2:37 later with Ivan Khomutov also assisting on the insurance goal.
Vrana upped the Albany advantage to 4-1 with his tenth of the season at the 11:56 mark off an assist from Brad Ference. Barry Tallackson made it 5-1 with his 13th of the season off a pretty outlet feed from Ben Carpentier at 13:55, with Matt DeMarchi also collecting a helper. Khomutov closed out the scoring at 6-1 with his eighth of the year, unassisted, with 4:32 left to play.
Suglobov was the first star of the game with two goals, Vrana the second with a goal and an assist and Doyle the third with 36 saves. Dubielewicz took the loss with 26 saves. The River Rats were 1 for 3 on the power play and 7 for 7 on the penalty kill. The Sound Tigers had a 37-32 shots on goal advantage.
