
Grand Rapids tops Barons 5-1

GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- . Donald MacLean scored his AHL leading 45th goal leading Grand Rapids to a 5-1 win over the Barons on Wednesday night. The game wrapped up a five game road stretch for the Barons who return to home ice for their next two contests.
Doubling up the Barons in shots-on-goal, 12-6, the Grand Rapids Griffins scored the first period's only goal for a 1-0 lead. Darryl Bootland fired home a rebound goal on the Griffins first power play chance of the night at the 11:10 mark of the frame. Kyle Quincey and Tomas Kopecky assisted on the goal, Bootland's 18th of the year.
Three unanswered second period goals by the Griffins led to a 4-0 advantage through forty minutes of play. The AHL's top goal scorer, Donald MacLean, fired home his 45th tally of the year on a breakaway just 1:34 into the middle period on assists from Bryan Helmer and Kent MacDonell. Jiri Hudler, the AHL's third leading point scorer, scored his 30th goal of the season just 90-seconds later for a 3-0 lead. The final goal of the period came from MacDonell, who's quick shot from the slot area alluded Barons goaltender Dimitri Patzold at the 12:22 mark of the second period. Grand Rapids' goaltender Jimmy Howard was tested on just five shots-on-goal from the Barons during the period.
The teams exchanged third period goals to finalize a Grand Rapids 5-1 win. The Griffins improved to 6-1-0-0 against the Barons this season. The teams have three games remaining in the season series, with the next game scheduled for March 17th at Grand Rapids. Mike Iggulden scored the Barons only goal of the game on a power play at the 11:30 mark of the final period on assists from Lukas Kaspar and Tim Conboy. Grand Rapids matched Iggulden's 19th goal of the season as Nick Martens scored with just 48-seconds remaining in the game.
The Barons return home for back-to-back games against Hamilton on Friday, March 3rd and Saturday, March 4th at 7pm. Saturday night's game will feature a Matt Carkner Bobblehead Doll for the first 3,000 fans in attendance. Tickets are available, for as low as $9.00 per ticket, at the Quicken Loans Arena Box Office.
