The Sacramento River Cats (63-40) lost 2-0 to the Portland Beavers (50-53) on Monday in a pitchers' duel at Raley Field in West Sacramento, Calif. RHP Ben Howard, RHP Brian Tollberg and RHP Brandon Villafuerte combined on the three-hit shutout. Tollberg (5-2) earned the win for Portland, allowing just 2 H in 4.0 IP in relief. The Beavers scored their runs in the third inning on RBI-singles by 2B Bernie Castro and RF Phil Nevin.
RHP Mike Wood (6-2) took the loss for Sacramento, allowing 2 R (0 ER) on 4 H in 6.0 IP. 2B Esteban German, DH Brian Sellier and RF Mike Lockwood managed the Cats' only three hits. Monday's game marked just the fifth time this season the River Cats were held scoreless.
