Meadows, Hodges Take PCL Nods

Published on July 21, 2003 under Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.– In midst of throwing a two-hit shutout on July 18th, Nashville Sounds right-hander Brian Meadows broke a Pacific Coast League record that had stood for 45 years by not allowing a walk in 69 and 2/3 innings, earning him League Pitcher of the Week honors. Edmonton Trappers third baseman Scott Hodges wins the Batter of the Week Award by driving in 10 runs in just five games during the Triple-A All-Star Break-shortened period beginning with games on July 17th and continuing through July 20th.

Meadows, who hails from Troy, Alabama, broke the record of 68 2/3 consecutive innings without allowing a base on balls previously set by Vancouver Mounties hurler George Bamberger in 1958. Meadows began his streak on July 17th , 2002 and carried it into his start against Omaha on July 18th, where the Pittsburgh Pirates prospect inscribed his name in the PCL record books by holding the Royals to just two hits while walking none and striking out three for the complete game, shutout victory, his seventh straight of the season. This marks the second time the starter has claimed the circuit's Pitcher of the Week nod, having also won it for the week of April 14th. Meadows, who's streak is still active, surpasses a fellow right-hander in Bamberger, who led the League in ERA in 1958 with a mark of 2.45 and was named to that season's PCL All-Star team.

Louisville, Kentucky native Scott Hodges came back from the Triple-A All-Star Break refreshed, going 3-for-4 in the first game of a double header at Tucson on July 18th with a run scored, a home run, and three runs batted in. The following day, the Montreal Expos farmhand again went 3-for-4 with a homer, two runs scored and three more RBI, before ending the week with another 3-for-4 performance, driving in three runs, and scoring three runs while hitting a double and home run.
