Edmonton Trappers News Release
Third baseman Scott Hodges was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, a double, a home run and three RBI as the Edmonton Trappers downed the Tucson Sidewinders 6-3 Sunday night at Tucson Electric Park. Hodges had an enormous series, homering three times, including twice in the last two days, and driving in 10 runs. The win by the Trappers was their fourth in five games in Tucson and moves the club five games ahead of the second-place Salt Lake Stingers in the North Division standings. Edmonton has been one of the hottest clubs in the PCL as of late, winning eight of their last 10 games and 23 of their last 34 to move seven games over .500 for the first time this campaign. Tucson and Edmonton combined for 14 home runs in the five games, with each club hitting seven. The season series between the two clubs is tied at five, although Edmonton has won five of the last six contests after being swept in a four-game series in Tucson to open the season. The Trappers begin a 10-game homestand against the Las Vegas 51s on Monday night at TELUS Field.
Andrew Good (0-2) made the start for the Sidewinders on Sunday night and retired the first four batters that he faced before allowing a one-out single to Valentino Pascucci in the second inning. Hodges followed with his 10th home run of the season over the fence in right field. He is currently third on the club in RBI with 48. Edmonton's All-star left fielder Terrmel Sledge led off the third inning with his 17th double of the season. With two down in the frame Hodges came through with a double to right field that scored Sledge with the Trappers third run. Shortstop Anthony Medrano followed with a single to center field that plated the third baseman with the eventual winning run. Edmonton tacked on two more runs off Good in the sixth inning, all with two out. Pascucci reached on an infield single, Hodges followed with a base hit to put runners at first and second and Medrano cashed in both runners with a double to left field. Good took the loss, allowing six runs on nine hits in 6.0 innings. He struck out just one batter.
Trapper right-hander Ron Chiavacci (4-1) turned in another solid outing as he won his third consecutive start and extended his winning streak to four games. He kept the Sidewinders off the board for the first six innings, scattering five hits over that span. Tucson finally got to him for three runs in the seventh inning. Outfielder Danny Bautista, on an injury rehabilitation assignment from the Arizona Diamondbacks, tripled to open the inning. With one out first baseman Billy Martin doubled to right field, breaking up Chiavacci's shutout bid. Left fielder Doug DeVore followed with his eighth home run of the season to draw the Sidewinders to within three runs of the lead. Chiavacci walked Tim Olson and Steve Neal after the longball by DeVore, but Tucson was unable to push across another run. Left-hander Jose Rodriguez took over in the eighth inning and tossed two shutout frames for his first save of the season. Chiavacci allowed three runs on eight hits and two walks, while fanning four in 7.0 innings of work to earn the victory.
