AUTOZONE PARK, MEMPHIS, SHINE FOR NATIONAL AUDIENCE DURING 2003 TRIPLE-A ALL-STAR GAME

International League beats Pacific Coast League 13-9 on ESPN2 in front of 15,000-plus in downtown Memphis

Richmond catcher Johnny Estrada led the way for the International League in a 13-9 win over the Pacific Coast League in the 16th annual Triple-A All-Star Game presented by AutoZone Wednesday at AutoZone Park in downtown Memphis.

A crowd of 15,214 watched the Braves prospect go 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBI to pace a 16-hit IL attack. Estrada was named as the Maurice LaCroix/Lou Gehrig Player-of-the-Game as well as the Sportsticker IL "Star of Stars." Oklahoma outfielder Jason Jones was awarded the PCL "Star of Stars" as he hit a three-run homer to lead the PCL in RBI for the game. Columbus Clipper Sam Marsonek picked up the win as well as the Maurice LaCroix/Lou Gehrig Pitcher-of-the-Game award.

The game, broadcast live on ESPN2 and The Sporting News Radio Network, was the highest-scoring Triple-A All-Star Game in the history of the series, which dates back to 1988. Six different players homered, including Pawtucket outfielders Lou Collier and Anton French, as well as Estrada, Jones, Colorado Springs' Rene Reyes and Durham's Jason Smith.

French, Collier and Estrada each had three hits in the game and French and Collier also scored three times each. No PCL batter had more than one hit in the game.

The IL used 25 players, including eight pitchers, and the PCL played 23 (six pitchers). Memphis Redbirds starter Jason Ryan took the loss, giving up the three earned runs in the fifth. The other two Redbirds All-Stars also got into the contest as Jason Bowers entered the game as a defensive replacement at shortstop in the sixth and reliever Matt Duff pitched the seventh inning, giving up one run on one hit. Bowers went 0-for-1 at the plate but walked and scored in the bottom of the sixth.

The win for the IL was just its second in the current format. After beating the PCL 8-4 at Harbor Park in Norfolk in 1998, the IL had fallen to the PCL for four straight seasons.
