Sacramento River Cats News Release

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Andrew Werner picked up the quality start-allowing just three runs on six hits and no walks with seven strikeouts in seven innings of work-but the River Cats lost to Colorado Springs by a score of 3-1 on Saturday evening at Security Service Field.

The Springs put the first run on the board with a second-inning home run from Xavier Nady on a 2-2 pitch, putting the Sky Sox ahead 1-0 after two. Four innings later-in the top of the sixth-Sacramento tied the game at one on a Jemile Weeks sacrifice fly scoring Ryan Ortiz who doubled to lead off the frame. Unfortunately for the Cats, the Sox put the eventual game-winning runs on the board in the bottom half on a Kent Matthes two-run home run to left field, sealing Sacramento's 3-1 loss.

Despite the quality start, Werner suffered his 14th loss of the season, continuing his streak of having a decision in every start in 2013. Mike Zagurski tossed one scoreless inning of relief with two strikeouts, while Anthony Aliotti paced the Cats offensively, going 2-for-3 with a double.

The win was awarded to righty Sean Gallagher, who gave up one earned run on four hits with four strikeouts in 7.1 innings of work, while Manny Corpas tallied his first save with 1.2 shutout innings. Matthes finished 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI, while Brent Paulsen went 2-for-4 with a run and two strikeouts.

The loss puts Sacramento 2.5 games back of Las Vegas for the lead in the division with nine games to play, and Las Vegas still in action on Saturday night.

The fifth and final game of the series is set for 12:35 p.m. on Sunday afternoon at Security Service Field in Colorado Springs when lefty Carlos Hernandez (0-2, 8.00 ERA) starts opposite Sky Sox righty Collin McHugh (5-3, 3.08 ERA).

The River Cats are back at Raley Field at 7:05 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 26, for their final home series of the regular season. They take on the Fresno Grizzlies for the Highway 99 Showdown in a four-game series that ends with Fan Appreciation Day on Aug. 29.
