Grizzlies Lose Second Extra-Innings Game of Series

Las Vegas, Nv.---For the second time in this series, the Las Vegas 51's (75-57) put together a late rally as the defeated the Fresno Grizzlies (63-70) 9-8 in ten innings on Friday night at Cashman Field.

Twice in the bottom of the ninth, the 51s were down to their last strike but rallied against Fresno right-handed reliever Heath Hembree (1-4). The 51s laced three straight hits together with two out, and nobody on the in the ninth which set up a two-strike double by shortstop Brandon Hicks which tied the game 8-8.

The game stayed that way beginning in the bottom of the tenth. With one out, pinch hitter Juan Centeno singled to left field. He then stole second, and eventually moved to third on a passed ball on what was ball four to 51s third baseman Zach Lutz. That set the stage for left fielder Eric Campbell who was the hero with a game-winning hit on Wednesday night in 11 innings. It was Campbell again in this contest who jumped on the first pitch he saw from Hembree in the tenth and ripped it down the left field line for the game-ending single.

For Hembree it was his fifth blown save this year, as he is 30-35 in such chances. Hembree gave up five hits in 1 2/3 innings. He gave up three runs (all earned), he walked one, and, struck out one.

The bulk of the Fresno runs came in the sixth inning when they struck for six runs. The squad was down 5-2 going to the frame as third baseman Chris Dominguez led off with a single. Following him was left fielder Kensuke Tanaka (1). He lofted a high drive to right field which cleared the 20-foot wall, and that made it 5-4 Las Vegas. It was his first home run in North America. The biggest hit of the inning was a bases-clearing double by first baseman Johnny Monell that gave Fresno an 8-5 lead. The Grizzlies had 12 batters in the sixth.

The winning pitcher was right-hander D.J. Mitchell (6-4) as he tossed two shutout innings.

Fresno right-handed starter Mitch Lively lasted five innings. He issued seven hits, five runs (four earned), he walked four, and struck out four. Las Vegas righty starter Jacob de Grom worked five innings (plus), he gave up the homer to Tanaka, and overall seven hits. He allowed six runs (all earned), he walked two, struck out four, and issued a wild pitch, and, a hit batter.

With the win, Las Vegas has a two-game first place lead over Sacramento in the Pacific Coast League's Pacific Southern Division.

Game four of this scheduled five-game series will be on Saturday night at Cashman Field. For Fresno, right-hander Yusmeiro Petit (5-6) will pitch against Las Vegas right-hander Matt Fox (6-4).

GRIZZLIES PAWS: Angel Pagan (left hamstring) on his rehab assignment--his first game with Fresno played six innings in center field. He was 1-3 with a single, hit by pitch, a sacrifice fly, and two RBI's.

Fresno is 7-8 in extra innings.

Dominguez had three hits, and reached base safely five times. It was his sixth three-hit game this season. Tanaka had three hits, and reached base safely four times. He is now hitting .332. It was his ninth three-hit game this year.

For the first time since becoming a father, right-hander Steve Edlefsen pitched. He gave up one run, four walks, and worked 1 2/3 innings. In addition, he fanned two.

Jackson Williams came into play right field on Friday night beginning in the seventh inning. It was his first appearance in his professional career, which began in 2007 at a defensive position other than catcher.
