Gallagher Captains Sky Sox to 3-1 Win over Sacramento

August 24, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

Starting pitcher Sean Gallagher (W, 2-2) only allowed one run, in a season-high 7.1 innings, to help captain the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (64-68) to a 3-1 win over the Sacramento River Cats (74-61) in front of 8,293 fans during the Star Trek themed Sky Fest at Security Service Field.

Gallagher was stellar for the Sky Sox from the beginning. In the first inning the righty allowed a single, but then retired the next nine batters he faced. The only blemish on his night came in the top of the sixth inning when Sacramento scored their only run of the day on a Jemile Weeks sacrifice fly that brought home Ryan Ortiz. In his last two starts Gallagher has only allowed one run on eight hits with 13 strikeouts and four walks.

The offense backed up their starting pitcher's performance by scoring the first run of the game when Xavier Nady hit a moon shot to right field in the second inning. After the River Cats tied it on Weeks' sacrifice fly, they faced their arch-nemesis in the bottom of the sixth when Kent Matthes came up to the plate. With a runner on, Matthes launched a two-run homer to put the Sky Sox up 3-1. The outfielder has now hit eight of his 10 homers of the season against Sacramento. In 11 games against the River Cats this year he is 16-for-39 (.410) with 10 runs and 14 RBIs.

Colorado Springs was unable to get any more runs off of Sacramento starting pitcher Andrew Werner (L, 11-14), who finished the day with seven strikeouts, but the two-run cushion would be all the Sox would need. Reliever Manny Corpas (S, 1) came in for Gallagher with one out in the eighth inning and only allowed one hit en route to his first save of the season.

The contest was just two hours and thirteen minutes long which is the team's shortest game of the season. Their previous shortest game was at home on May 7th against the Iowa Cubs when Tyler Chatwood threw a complete game shutout.

Tomorrow the Sky Sox will look to win their second straight home series when righty Collin McHugh (2-1, 3.38) goes to the mound against lefty Carlos Hernandez (0-2, 8.00) at 1:35 PM MT.
