River Bandits out Power LumberKings in Series Opener

May 19, 2015 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - Six different half innings featured multiple runs, two teams combined for 25 hits, and 24 runs were scored in the opener of an eight game homestand for the Clinton LumberKings (16-22). For the home team however, it was the visiting Quad Cities River Bandits (30-8) who came out on top of a 14-10 final score and became the first club in all of Minor League Baseball to reach the 30 win mark.

Clinton starter Tyler Herb (ND) struggled to find the strike zone over just 2.2 innings, as he put his club into an early 5-0 hole. Herb walked a season high five and gave up five runs, four earned. But Clinton answered a four-run top of the third inning with an equally impressive bottom of the half inning vs. River Bandits' starter Brock Dykxhoorn (ND). The righty gave up a two RBI double to Chris Mariscal and a two run home run to Joe DeCarlo (5) in the frame, but allowed only those four runs over five full innings.

After the LumberKings pulled within one run, Quad Cities responded vs. reliever Osmer Morales in the sixth inning. A walk and four consecutive one out singles plated four runs, and put Quad Cities ahead 9-4. But again, Clinton answered right away and did one better, as the LumberKings scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth, which equaled their highest single inning run production of the season.

Against Jordan Mills (BS) in that sixth, Clinton sent 10 men to the plate. Kristian Brito plated two runs with a single, his 12th and 13th RBIs in 17 May starts. After the LumberKings then loaded the bases, Erick Mejia tripled into the right field corner, cleared the bases, and recorded his first three RBIs of the season. Mejia then scored what was at that point the go ahead run on a wild pitch.

The Clinton pitching woes in the series opener continued in the eighth and the ninth innings. Quad Cities plated three runs in the eighth, as Rohn Pierce (L, 1-2) and Kody Kerski (BS) struggled vs. the River Bandits. Pierce departed with two men on and one out. Sean McMullen tied the game with an RBI single off of Kerski, and Jason Martin plated two runs with a base hit two batters later. Quad Cities then scored two insurance runs in the ninth, and Reymin Guduan struck out the side in the bottom of the inning to close out the ballgame.

Eric Peterson (W, 2-0) pitched two scoreless innings, while his twin brother Pat is scheduled to start Tuesday night for the LumberKings. Four different River Bandits' starters recorded at least three hits, while McMullen (4-6) tallied a season high six RBIs. Erick Mejia was the lone Clinton starter with three hits and three RBIs, both season highs.

The two Western Division rivals will be back at it Tuesday night in Clinton. Game two of the four game series is scheduled for 6:30 CT, as Pat Peterson (4-3, 3.44) will get the start for the LumberKings. Chris Lee (3-2, 4.11) was scheduled to start for Quad Cities, but the lefty was traded to the Baltimore Orioles Monday afternoon. Quad Cities has not announced a starter for Tuesday's matchup. The LumberKings broadcast can be heard on WCCI 100.3 FM, WCCIRadio.com, and LumberKings.com.
