Homers Hurt Fort Wayne at Lake County
May 19, 2015 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
EASTLAKE, Ohio -- With the wind blowing out at Classic Park on Tuesday afternoon, the Lake County Captains hit four home runs and beat the TinCaps, 8-5. All eight of Lake County's runs were driven in on homers.
Fort Wayne (12-24) suffered the loss despite leading early. In the top of the first inning, third baseman Duanel Jones doubled home center fielder Michael Gettys, who also had doubled. Jones now has a team-leading 29 RBIs -- tied for the most in the Midwest League. Also in the first inning, right fielder Franmil Reyes drove designated hitter Nick Torres in on a groundball to second base.
The 2-0 TinCaps lead lasted until there were two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning. That was when Captains shortstop Yu-Cheng Chang crushed a grand slam to left-center field that put the home team up 4-2.
From there, Fort Wayne manufactured three runs, but Lake County's power was overwhelming. Gettys plated a run in the fifth on a fielder's choice only for Greg Allen to respond in the bottom half with a solo home run to right-center field. The Captains' lead grew to three runs in the seventh as Francisco Mejia blasted a solo shot of his own to right-center.
Torres and Jones both brought runs in on groundouts in the top of the eighth. Yet, again, Lake County (21-18) retaliated with a home run right away. Dorsyss Paulino's two-run homer in the home eighth put the Captains up 8-5 for good.
Dinelson Lamet (L, 0-3) struck out three in 4 2/3 innings, but was bested by left-hander Justus Sheffield (W, 4-1) who fanned six in 5 innings. J.P. Feyereisen (S, 9) shut the TinCaps down in the ninth.
After becoming only the second player in Fort Wayne franchise history to have a six-hit game on Monday, TinCaps shortstop Ruddy Giron was a more modest 1-for-3 with a run scored and a walk on Tuesday.
Fort Wayne is back at Classic Park for the third game of its four-game series on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. The TinCaps are in line to start T.J. Weir (2-0, 5.57) against southpaw Thomas Pannone (2-0, 4.37). The game can be heard on ESPN Radio 1380, TinCaps.com, and the TuneIn Radio app.
