Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

CLINTON, Iowa (May 19, 2015) - Quad Cities River Bandits left fielder Sean McMullen had a career-high four hits and six RBIs - the most in a single game by a River Bandit in three seasons - and designated hitter Jason Martin had a seventh-inning, go-ahead two-run single among four RBIs in a 14-10 victory over the Clinton LumberKings at Ashford University Field Monday night.

McMullen's six RBIs were the most for Quad Cities since June 11, 2012, when Colin Walsh had six RBIs at Burlington in an 18-7 win, which was also the last time before Monday that the River Bandits combined with an opponent for as many as 24 runs. In addition to McMullen and Martin, catcher Jacob Nottingham and third baseman Nick Tanielu each had three hits. Tanielu became the first River Bandit to score four runs in a game since James Ramsay scored as many in a 13-2 win over Wisconsin last June 15.

The River Bandits (30-8) twice had five-run leads before falling behind, 10-9, and ultimately securing their 17th comeback win of the season. They won their seventh straight road series opener to begin the year, kept the best record in professional baseball for a 13th straight day, and extended their lead in the Midwest League Western Division standings to seven games over Cedar Rapids (22-15).

The scoring began in the first inning, when LumberKings right-hander Tyler Herb walked three straight batters before McMullen grounded into an RBI fielder's choice. Quad Cities added four runs in the third inning, when Tanielu hit a leadoff double, advanced to third base on Herb's balk, and scored on McMullen's double. McMullen went to third base on a wild pitch, right fielder Ryan Bottger walked, and Martin hit an RBI single. Second baseman Alex Hernandez walked to load the bases, and shortstop Thomas Lindauer grounded to shortstop Erick Mejia, whose errant throw to second base allowed two runs to score. Herb was charged with five runs - four earned - in 2 2/3 innings.

With a 5-0 lead, River Bandits right-hander Brock Dykxhoorn allowed Clinton (16-22) to close within 5-4 in the third inning. Second baseman Gianfranco Wawoe hit a leadoff single, shortstop Erick Mejia hit a one-out single, and designated hitter Chris Mariscal hit a two-run double, before third baseman Joe DeCarlo hit a two-run home run to left field to make it 5-4. Dykxhoorn retired the next eight batters to finish five innings. He was charged with four earned runs on five hits and one walk with a season-high seven strikeouts.

Quad Cities built its lead to 9-4 in the sixth inning with four runs off right-hander Osmer Morales. First baseman Jamie Ritchie drew a one-out walk, Nottingham and Tanielu singled, and McMullen reached on an RBI infield single to the third-base side of the pitcher's mound. Bottger hit an RBI single to right field, and Martin hit into an RBI fielder's choice, with a wild throw by Mejia toward first base allowing an extra run to score. But the LumberKings rallied to take the lead against left-hander Jordan Mills, who hit left fielder Taylor Zeutenhorst with one out and allowed catcher Wayne Taylor's two-out single, followed by first baseman Kristian Brito's two-run double. Wawoe reached on Lindauer's fielding error, center fielder Chantz Mack walked to load the bases, and Mejia hit a three-run triple to the right-field corner before scoring the go-ahead run on a wild pitch for a 10-9 lead.

In the eighth inning, LumberKings right-hander Rohn Pierce (1-2) allowed consecutive singles to Nottingham and Tanielu before right-hander Kody Kerski entered to face McMullen, who grounded a game-tying single into center field. Kerski walked Bottger to load the bases, and Martin bounced a two-run single into center field for a 12-10 lead. In the ninth inning, right-hander Troy Scott walked Nottingham and Tanielu with two outs, and McMullen lined a two-run double down the right-field line for a 14-10 River Bandits lead.

Quad Cities pitchers combined for a season-high 13 strikeouts and shut out Clinton for the final three innings. In the seventh and eighth innings, right-hander Eric Peterson (2-0) only allowed an eighth-inning, two-out walk and struck out three batters. Left-hander Reymin Guduan struck out all three batters in the ninth inning.

The River Bandits continue their series in Clinton at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Ashford University Field.
