Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AUG. 29, 2012) - For the first time in six years, two Quad Cities players have been named Midwest League postseason All-Stars. Anthony Garcia is one of three outfielders and Colin Walsh is the designated hitter selected by the league's 16 field managers to the All-Star team announced on Wednesday.

Garcia and Walsh are the first River Bandits postseason All-Stars since first baseman Matt Adams was selected in 2010. Prior to Adams, the last postseason All-Stars for Quad Cities were catcher Bryan Anderson and designated hitter Randy Roth in 2006. Left-handed reliever Kevin Ool was a postseason All-Star in 2005, the first season the club was a St. Louis Cardinals affiliate.

Garcia, 20, was placed on the disabled list Aug. 25 but is currently second in the league in home runs (19), extra base-hits (56) and slugging percentage (.525). His 208 total bases are third in the league. In a career-high 109 games, Garcia has also set new career marks in home runs, extra-base hits, total bases, at-bats (396), runs (63), hits (111) and doubles (34). He also committed only one error in his first 71 games in the outfield.

Garcia, a native of Carolina, Puerto Rico, was selected by the Cardinals out of San Juan Educational School in the 18th round of the 2009 draft. He played in 2009 and 2010 with the rookie-level GCL Cardinals and the rookie-level Johnson City Cardinals in 2010 and 2011.

Garcia had career highs with six RBIs and 10 total bases while hitting two home runs in a 20-3 home win over Beloit May 30. To start the second half, he went 6-for-11 in a three-game series at Peoria and had his first career four-hit game June 24, one day before he was named the Midwest League Player of the Week. He also started the second half with a 16-game hitting streak, which is tied for fourth in the Midwest League this season. He had another four-hit game at Lansing July 13 and homered in three straight games Aug. 2-4.

Walsh, 22, was among the league leaders in a plethora of offensive categories before he went on the disabled list in the first week of July. From July 2-Aug. 11, he played only one game in the Midwest League, but he returned on Aug. 12 and remains the league leader in slugging percentage (.538) and on-base percentage (.419). The switch hitter is third in the league with a .314 batting average and is tied for fifth in home runs (16) despite not hitting one since June 27. He has started 33 games in left field, 19 at second base, two at third base and 36 games as a designated hitter. He started as the Western Division designated hitter in the Midwest League All-Star Game June 19.

A native of La Jolla, Calif., and graduate of Stanford University, Walsh is in his third season in the Cardinals organization. He played for rookie-level Johnson City, short-season Batavia and Quad Cities in 2010. He was a member of the 2011 Midwest League Champions.

In his third season with Quad Cities, Walsh was the St. Louis Cardinals Minor League Player of the Month in May after hit-ting .366 with six home runs, 19 runs, 25 RBIs, and a 1.085 On-Base-Plus-Slugging (OPS) in 27 games. That month included a nine-game hitting streak from May 11-20 and a 22-game on-base streak from May 4-30. He homered in consecutive home games against Peoria May 5-6 and had his first career two-homer game May 6 at Modern Woodmen Park. Walsh had a career-high four hits on Tuesday night at Clinton.
