
Riders' Quick Start Not Enough against Cards

SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI - The Frisco RoughRiders jumped out to an early lead, but the Springfield Cardinals answered with seven runs over the first four innings to take the series opener, 7-3, on Friday at Hammons Field.
Frisco tallied three runs in the first inning. Preston Beck led off with a single and Alex Burg doubled him home with two outs to put the Riders up, 1-0. One batter later, Drew Robinson poked his 17th home run of the season to right field and Frisco led 3-0.
The Cardinals quickly responded in their half of the frame. After a one out single, Aledmys Diaz cut the Springfield deficit to one with his 10th home run of the season. Then, in the second inning, David Washington belted his 14th home run to put the Cardinals ahead 4-3. Charlie Tilson added an RBI single to make it 5-3 at the end of two innings.
Frisco starter Frank Lopez kept battling, but the results remained. He allowed a leadoff walk in the third inning and designated hitter Mike Ohlman doubled him home to extend Springfield's lead to 6-3. Lopez (3-7) bowed out after three innings and lost his third conseuctive decision.
Jefri Hernandez entered the game in the fourth inning and allowed a run over two innings in relief. The Cardinals notched their seventh run on a two-out RBI from Diaz in the fourth. Diaz had a two-hit night with three RBI and two runs scored.
Springfield starter Corey Baker (5-5) settled in after his rough start. The right-hander allowed three runs on five hits and struck out four over five innings. The win is Baker's first since July 28. Kurt Heyer replaced Baker in the sixth and allowed one hit over three scoreless frames before Ronnie Shaban closed out the ninth.
The RoughRiders (25-28, 54-69) and Cardinals continue their series at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday. LHP Chad Bell looks to even the series against LHP Jimmy Reed. The Riders return to the Metroplex on Tuesday, August 25 to play a four-game set against San Antonio (San Diego Padres). Bring your dog to the game for Bark in the Park Night on August 26.
