San Antonio Missions News Release
Arkansas scored twice in the 11th to defeat San Antonio 3-1 in Friday night's series opener before 6,571 at Wolff Stadium.
Friday's contest was another terrific pitchers' duel at the Wolff with San Antonio's Dennis O'Grady and Arkansas' Kyle McGowin both in complete control.
O'Grady, who entered his start mired in a deep slump, snapped out Friday, allowing just one run on six hits and two walks, while striking out three over a career-high seven innings. O'Grady threw 62 of his 98 pitches for strikes. The only run against O'Grady came via an Erick Salcedo sacrifice fly in the fifth, which tied the game at one.
San Antonio's only run during McGowin's seven innings came in the second on Kyle Gaedele's two-out, RBI single to left. McGowin allowed just five hits and one walk, while fanning three.
Both bullpens were sharp as well, matching zeroes from the eighth through 10th innings.
However, in the top of the 11th, Arkansas finally broke through against reliever Cody Hebner (0-2), plating a pair of runs on a Sherman Johnson sacrifice fly and a Wade Hinkle RBI groundout.
Eduard Santos (4-2) worked out of a jam in the bottom of the 11th to lock up the Traveler victory.
San Antonio (24-30, 55-69) resumes its three-game series with Arkansas (27-27, 63-60) Saturday on a special Star Wars Night benefitting the Alzheimer's Association. The Missions will be wearing special R2-D2 jerseys for the game that will be auctioned off with all the proceeds going to the Alzheimer's Association. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM. Bryan Rodriguez (6-11, 4.04) will get the ball for the Missions, while the Travs counter with fellow righty Albert Suarez (8-9, 3.14).
