Springfield Cardinals News Release
Springfield, MO - The Midland RockHounds took the series finale, 7-1, against the Springfield Cardinals before the sellout crowd of 7,272 fans at Hammons Field on Thursday night.
After RHP Alex Reyes (L, 1-2) had blanked the RockHounds (36-17, 71-52) through his first two innings, striking out four along the way, Midland broke through in the top of the third. DH Beau Taylor cracked the scoreless tie with a solo shot to lead off the inning. CF Jaycob Brugman and 2B Colin Walsh followed with consecutive singles, before Reyes battled back with his fifth strikeout. However, 1B Anthony Aliotti skied an RBI sacrifice fly to right field, bringing in Taylor. With Walsh at first base, SS Chad Pinder knocked a double to right field, which was subsequently bobbled by RF David Washington with the error enabling Walsh to score on the play, making it a 3-0 Midland lead.
The Cardinals (26-27, 56-67) countered with one run right away in the bottom of the third inning against RHP Jake Sanchez. DH Mike O'Neill opened the inning with a walk, before moving to second on a groundout one out later. After SS Aledmys Diaz worked a two-out walk to extend the inning, 3B Bruce Caldwell ripped an RBI double that brought in O'Neill and cut the Cardinals deficit to 3-1.
Reyes bounced back with scoreless innings in the fourth and fifth to keep the Cardinals close through his final two frames. He finished the outing with just the three runs (two earned) on four hits and three walks, while striking out nine in five innings.
RHP Thomas Lee picked up where Reyes had left off with a scoreless sixth, but the RockHounds stretched the advantage in the seventh. Lee struck out the first man up, but a walk from Walsh and a single by 3B Ryon Healy put two men on. Aliotti then brought both runners home with a two-run double to left-center. Lee battled back with his fourth strikeout, but then LF Josh Whitaker pulled a two-run homer to left field, swinging the Hounds in front, 7-1.
Midland RHP Kris Hall (W, 4-0) followed the RockHounds rally with a scoreless bottom of the seventh and eighth, wrapping up his 3.1-inning outing. LHP Jeff Urlaub then took over for the bottom of the ninth and dealt a 1-2-3 final frame to close the 7-1 win for the RockHounds. The Cardinals received a late scoreless inning apiece from LHP Ryan Sherriff and RHP Robby Rowland.
