
Rider Award Nominees Unveiled

The Saskatchewan Roughrider nominees for the CFL awards were announced today. This year's nominees are: Corey Holmes (Most Outstanding Player), Chris Szarka (Outstanding Canadian), Gene Makowsky (Outstanding Offensive Lineman), Reggie Hunt (Outstanding Defensive Player), Corey Holmes (Outstanding Special Teams Player) and Donald Heaven (Outstanding Rookie). All voting for the CFL Most Outstanding Player Awards is done by the Football Reporters of Canada (FRC).
COREY HOLMES
MOST OUTSTANDING PLAYER
First nomination as Most Outstanding Player...leads the CFL with 915 punt return yards...second in the league with 848 kickoff return yards...has also rushed for 291 yards...leads the Riders with six touchdowns this season...Holmes is the first ever Rider special teams player to be nominated for the award...last Roughrider to win the award was Ron Lancaster in 1976.
CHRIS SZARKA
OUTSTANDING CANADIAN
First nomination as Roughriders Outstanding Canadian...has career high 415 rushing yards this season...has also set career high with five touchdowns...last Roughrider fullback to receive the Outstanding Canadian nomination was Steve Molnar in 1977...the last Rider to win Outstanding Canadian was Ray Elgaard in 1992.
GENE MAKOWSKY
OUTSTANDING OFFENSIVE LINEMAN
First nomination as Outstanding Offensive Lineman...has started 16 games at right tackle...only Rider offensive lineman to start every game at the same position...was a unanimous selection this year as outstanding lineman...last Roughrider offensive lineman to win award was Roger Aldag in 1988.
REGGIE HUNT
OUTSTANDING DEFENSIVE PLAYER
First nomination as Outstanding Defensive Player...has been dominant in rookie season for the Roughriders...has team high 79 defensive tackles, 14 special teams tackles, two fumble recoveries, two quarterback sacks, and an interception...last Roughrider to win Outstanding Defensive Player was Jearld Baylis in 1993.
DONALD HEAVEN
OUTSTANDING ROOKIE
Has started 15 games at left tackle in his rookie season... last Roughrider offensive lineman to receive the Outstanding Rookie nomination was Chris Burns in 1994...last Roughrider to win Outstanding Rookie was Vince Goldsmith in 1981.
COREY HOLMES
OUTSTANDING SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER (JOHN AGRO AWARD)
First nomination as Special Teams Player...leads the CFL with 915 punt return yards...second in the league with 848 kickoff return yards...this is the first season that this award has been voted on by the Football Reporters of Canada
