Allouettes Announce 2002 Most Outstanding Players

Montreal, October 23, 2002 - The Canadian football League announced today the 2002 Most Outstanding Player nominees. Here are the Montreal players who will be representing the team, as selected by the Montreal media.

Most Outstanding Player: ANTHONY CALVILLO

Quarterback Anthony Calvillo was unanimously selected as the Alouettes' Most Outstanding Player. Calvillo is playing in the most productive season of his career, as he completed 319 of his 535 passes for gains of 4,694 yards, 29 yards shy of the best total in team history (4,723 - Sam Etcheverry, 1956). Calvillo also threw 24 touchdown passes and was intercepted only 10 times. He threw for more than 300 yards in eight games this season.

Most Outstanding Defensive Player: BARRON MILES

Defensive back Barron Miles is currently tied for the league-lead with seven interceptions for gains of 44 yards. He made 44 tackles, two quarterback sacks, knocked down two passes and recovered three fumbles. Miles also dominates the CFL with two blocked kicks and, something which does not appear in the statistics, he also tipped a few other kicks on plays that changed games.

Most Outstanding Rookie: KEITH STOKES

Receiver and specialist Keith Stokes has been astonishing in 2002. In addition to returning 65 punts for gains of 861 yards and three touchdowns, Stokes shined at his receiver position. He caught 40 passes for 560 yards and scored three other touchdowns. Stokes also gained 436 yards on kickoff returns. In his first CFL season, he is fourth in the league with 2097 combined yards.

Most Outstanding Canadian: BEN CAHOON

Ben Cahoon stands out each year by his way to catch anything that is thrown in his direction. He is having the best season of his career with gains of 1000 yards on 71 catches and six touchdowns. Cahoon is also a key player for the Alouettes on fake field goals, as he is the holder. This year, he carried the ball twice for 49 yards on two successful fakes.

Most Outstanding Lineman: BRYAN CHIU

Voted unanimously as the Alouettes' top lineman, the leader of Montreal's offensive line, Bryan Chiu, proved this year that he is the best center in the CFL. Chiu and his linemates protected Anthony Calvillo who had a lot of time to complete his passes and break several team records. Chiu also created gaps for the different running backs who carried the ball for the Alouettes in 2002. The Alouettes currently dominate the CFL with 6,562 total yards.

Most Outstanding Special Team Player: KEITH STOKES

On the special teams, Keith Stokes' statistics speak for themselves. Selected unanimously, Stokes returned 65 punts for gains of 861 yards and three touchdowns, 22 punts for gains of 436 yards. With 2097 combined yards, he leads the Alouettes and is fourth in the CFL.
