Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Portland, Maine - Brandon Bednar hit a two-run single with the bases loaded in the 11th and the Richmond Flying Squirrels (47-61) defeated the Sea Dogs (50-57) 7-5, Wednesday night at Hadlock Field.
With the game tied 5-5, Richmond loaded the bases with nobody out against Jacob Dahlstrand (5-2). After back-to-back walks, Bednar took the first pitch he saw from Dahlstrand and lined it into left for the game-winning hit.
Each team had been held scoreless since the fourth inning, when Jordan Procyshen hit a solo homer off of Carlos Alvarado to tie the game at five.
Cody Hall (3-2) earned the win in relief. Hall pitched the ninth and 10th innings and allowed just one hit while walking one and striking out four. Richmond used five relievers who combined to work nine innings and allow just one run on five hits while striking out 10.
The Sea Dogs jumped out to an early lead on a two-run double by Jeremy Barfield in the bottom of the first off of Dillon McNamara.
Richmond answered in the top of the second on three hits, including an RBI single by Caleb Gindl and a two-out RBI infield single by Daniel Carbonell off of Kevin McAvoy.
Portland reclaimed the lead with two more runs in the bottom of the second. Danny Mars hit an RBI double to score Josh Tobias, then Cole Sturgeon grounded out to drive in Jordan Procyshen to make it 4-2.
The Squirrels took their first lead in the fourth - first Hunter Cole hit a two-run triple off of McAvoy to tie it 4-4, then two batters later Brandon Bednar bounced a high chopper for an infield single to score Cole and make it 5-4 Richmond.
McAvoy was making his first start since July 13th after being activated from the disabled list today. The righty allowed five earned runs on six hits in 3.2 innings.
McNamara was making his first start since he was in the New York-Penn League in 2014. He allowed four runs on four hits in 2+ innings.
The Sea Dogs and Richmond Flying Squirrels (Giants affiliate) wrap up their three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 12:00 PM from Hadlock Field. RHP Teddy Stankiewicz (3-4, 4.43) makes the start for Portland. Richmond counters with former Sea Dog LHP Nate Reed (1-2, 8.03). Tickets are available at seadogs.com or 207-879-9500.
