TONIGHT: The Richmond Flying Squirrels and Altoona Curve will meet in game two of a four-game series...The Flying Squirrels finished off a 9-6 victory in the completion of the suspended game from 7/12 before being three-hit by the Curve in a 5-1 loss in the seven-inning series-opener on Thursday night at Blair County Ballpark.
TONIGHT'S STARTERS: Right-hander Felix Romero gets the start in game two of the series for the Flying Squirrels...Earned the win in his last outing at Bowie 8/22...Tossed five scoreless innings and allowed four hits...Struck out six batters and walked one...Three of the four hits he allowed came in the bottom of the fourth inning...Retired the leadoff batter in four of his five innings...Recorded five fly outs and three ground outs...Threw 73 pitches, 52 strikes...Threw first-pitch strikes to 16 of the 20 batters he faced...Has allowed just one run in six of his 11 starts...Six of his 11 starts have been quality starts...Has gone six innings or more in seven of his 11 starts...Is 4-2 with a 2.86 ERA (20 er/63.0 ip) in 11 starts with Richmond...Is 2-0 in two starts against Altoona...Has allowed two runs on 12 hits in 14 innings against the Curve with 12 strikeouts and no walks...Overall is 2-0 with a 1.74 ERA (4 er/20.2 ip) in five appearances including two starts against Altoona.
Left-hander Tony Watson gets the nod in game two of the series for the Curve...Earned the win in his last start at Binghamton 8/22...Tossed six scoreless innings allowing four hits while striking out eight batters and walking one...Is 2-2 with a 4.71 ERA in six starts; however, 10 of the 15 runs he has allowed as a starter came in his first starts of the season...Is 2-1 with a 2.14 ERA in four starts this month...Has held left-handed batters to a .138 batting average against...Has struck out 89 batters and walked 18 in 92 1/3 innings...Was 3-0 with a 1.84 ERA and two saves in 25 relief appearances...Held batters to a .173 batting average against in relief, lowest among Eastern League relievers...Suffered the loss in his lone start at Richmond 7/30, allowing a season-high six runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings...Was 1-0 with a 1.59 ERA in five relief appearances against the Flying Squirrels, allowing two runs on five hits in 11 1/3 innings with seven strikeouts and five walks...Went 0-3 with a 8.22 ERA in five starts with Altoona in 2009...Placed on the Disabled List 5/5/09 and did not pitch the remainder of the season...Spent all of 2008 with Advanced-A Lynchburg and went 8-12 with a 3.56 ERA in 28 starts...Led the Carolina League with 151 2/3 innings pitched and finished sixth in ERA and WHIP...Made his pro debut in 2007 and went 7-2 with a 2.79 ERA in 13 starts combined between Short Season-A State College and Low-A Hickory...Originally selected by the Pirates in the ninth round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft...Attended the University of Nebraska.
THOMAS THE TRAIN: Outfielder Thomas Neal is third in the Eastern League in hits (143) and in doubles (38) and is fifth in total bases (216)...Since 6/1, Neal is batting .310 (91-for-294) in 77 games with 27 doubles, eight home runs, 41 RBI, and 49 runs scored...He has raised his batting average from .255 to .289 over that span.
RAY OF SUNSHINE: Right-hander Ronnie Ray has fired 12 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings, his longest scoreless streak of the season, with 12 strikeouts and four walks spanning his last 10 outings, and opposing hitters are just 4-for-41 (.098) against him over that stretch...Since 6/20, the 26-year-old is 2-0 with three saves and has allowed just four runs, two earned in 31 1/3 innings (0.57 ERA) while striking out 34 batters and walking eight spanning his last 26 outings...Opposing hitters are batting .132 (14-for-106) against him over that stretch.
HERE'S THE CATCH: Catcher Tyler La Torre has seen his average dip from .270 to .198 since taking over as the Flying Squirrels everyday catcher following the promotion of Jackson Williams to Triple-A Fresno 7/1...Over his last 39 games since 7/1, La Torre is batting .142 (18-for-127) with 41 strikeouts and 17 walks...Defensively, the 27-year-old is 9-for-34 (.265) in throwing out base runners since 7/1...He had previously thrown out just two of 20 attempted (.100) base stealers in his first 33 games.
DOUBLETREE DOWNTOWN DOUBLE PLAYS: The Richmond Flying Squirrels have turned 157 double plays in 130 games including six on 5/7 in Harrisburg...The Flying Squirrels have not gone more than three games without a double play this season...The club leads the Eastern League in double plays turned.
CFS STAT OF THE NIGHT: Right-hander Adrian Martin earned his first win with the Flying Squirrels in the completion of the suspended contest from 7/12, allowing four hits over 2 2/3 scoreless innings...Ironically, it was the second win the 25-year-old was credited with that day as he also received the victory after allowing one run on one hit in 2 2/3 at Binghamton while pitching for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats prior to his release by the Toronto Blue Jays 7/29...He also recorded his first professional hit in his first pro at-bat in the top of the seventh inning of the suspended game.
