Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
removed from being one-hit by Reading, Binghamton managed just five hits in a 9-1 loss to the R-Phils at First Energy Stadium Friday night. Drew Naylor struck out a season-best 11 men over seven innings to steal the show.
The B-Mets tallied their only run in the first inning against Naylor. Jose Coronado led off with a double to left. After Jordany Valdespin popped out to short, Josh Satin dropped an RBI single into right to score Coronado, propelling Binghamton (62-68) into a 1-0 lead.
Reading (64-66) snagged the lead away in the third. Keoni DeRenne led off with a single off starter Dylan Owen. Tuffy Gosewich followed it up with his sixth homer of the season, a two-run, opposite-field blast to right that vaulted the R-Phils into command 2-1.
Gosewich was back at it in the fifth when he lifted off for his second homer of the night, a solo shot to left-center, upping the advantage to two, 3-1.
The B-Mets kept it at a respectable margin until a trying sixth inning saw Reading chalk up five runs as 10 hitters came to the plate. Timo Perez started and ended the frame. The 35-year-old outfielder smashed a solo homer to right on a 1-1 offering from Owen leading off the frame. Michael Spidale followed and reached on an error committed by third baseman Zach Lutz. Tagg Bozied joined Spidale on base with an infield single to third. Owen suffered the knockout blow next as John Suomi hit a seeing-eye single through the right side, plating Spidale.
Owen exited in favor of Erik Turgeon, who made his second Double-A appearance. Cody Overbeck greeted him with a bloop RBI single to center, pushing the R-Phils ahead 6-1. DeRenne followed with a sac fly to center and Gosewich rounded out the inning's scoring with a run-scoring single to center, plating Overbeck, making it 8-1 Reading.
Owen was charged with seven runs - six earned - on eight hits over five-plus innings to draw his second straight loss. The three homers allowed were the most permitted by the right-hander this season.
DeRenne rounded out the game's scoring with a bases-loaded RBI single off Carlos Muniz in the seventh.
Naylor allowed a run on five hits over seven innings and walked two in picking up his 11th win of the season.
Satin was the lone Binghamton hitter to reach base three times. He singled, walked and was hit by a pitch.
The R-Phils outhit the B-Mets 14-5. Gosewich led the way with a 3-for-4 showing, including two homers and four RBI.
Binghamton and Reading square off in a double dip tomorrow beginning at 5:35 PM. Both games are scheduled for seven innings. RHP Eddie Kunz (6-7, 5.22) gets the call in Game 1 against LHP Yohan Flande (9-7, 4.52) of Reading. The B-Mets have yet to name their starter for Game 2, but the R-Phils will throw RHP Tyson Brummett (1-2, 4.96). The radio broadcast on Newsradio 1290 WNBF begins at 5:20 with the Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show.
